America's national parks weigh solitude against cellular access

3 hrs.

As cell phones, iPods and laptops creep steadily into every corner of modern life, America's national parks have stayed largely off the digital grid, among the last remaining outposts of ringtone-free human solitude.

For better or worse, that may soon change.

Under pressure from telecommunications companies and a growing number of park visitors who feel adrift without mobile-phone reception, the airwaves in such grand getaway destinations as Yellowstone National Park may soon be abuzz with new wireless signals.

That prospect has given pause to a more traditional cohort of park visitors who cherish the unplugged tranquility of the great outdoors, fearing an intrusion of mobile phones ??and the sound of idle chatter ??will diminish their experience.

Some have mixed emotions. Stephanie Smith, a 50-something Montana native who visits Yellowstone as many as six times a year, said she prefers the cry of an eagle to ring tones.

But she also worries that future generations may lose their appreciation for the value of nature and the need to preserve America's outdoor heritage if a lack of technology discourages them from visiting.

"You have to get there to appreciate it," Smith said. "It's a new world ??and technology is a part of it."

Balancing the two aesthetics has emerged as the latest challenge facing the National Park Service as managers in at least two premier parks, Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, consider recent requests to install new telecommunications towers or upgrade existing ones.

There is no system-wide rule governing cellular facilities in the 300 national parks, national monuments and other units the agency administers nationwide. Wireless infrastructure decisions are left up to the managers of individual park units.

The agency's mission statement requires it to protect park resources and the visitor experience, but each individual experience is unique, said Lee Dickinson, a special-uses program manager for the Park Service.

"I've had two visitors calling me literally within hours of each other who wanted exactly the opposite experience: One saying he didn't vacation anywhere without electronic access and the other complaining he was disturbed by another park visitor ordering pizza on his cell phone," Dickinson said.

Can?you hear me now?
Wireless supporters say more is at stake than the convenience of casual phone conversations. Cellular providers say new wireless infrastructure will boost public safety by improving communications among park rangers and emergency responders.

They argue that the ability to download smartphone applications that can deliver instant information on plants and animals will also enrich park visitors' experiences.

"Our customers are telling us that having access to technology will enhance their visit to wild areas," said Bob Kelley, spokesman for Verizon Wireless, which is seeking to install a new 100-foot cell tower at Yellowstone.

Rural communities that border the national parks also stand to benefit from enlarged cellular coverage areas.

On the other side of the debate, outdoor enthusiasts worry that bastions of quiet reflection could be transformed into noisy hubs where visitors yak on cell phones and fidget with electronic tablets, detracting from the ambience of such natural wonders as Yellowstone's celebrated geyser Old Faithful.

Expanding cellular reception may even compromise safety by giving some tourists a false sense of security in the back country, where extremes in weather and terrain test even the most skilled outdoorsman, according to the National Parks Conservation Association.

Tim Stevens, the association's Northern Rockies director, said distractions like meandering moose already challenge the attention of motorists clogging park roads at the height of the summer tourist season.

"People brake in the middle of the road to watch animals. The added distraction of a wireless signal ??allowing a driver to text Aunt Madge to say how great the trip is ??could have disastrous consequences," he said.

Yellowstone already offers some limited mobile-phone service, afforded by four cellular towers previously erected in developed sections of the park.

But vast swathes of America's oldest national park, which spans nearly 3,500 square miles across the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, still lack wireless reception in an age dominated by Wi-Fi and iPad users who expect access even in the most remote locations.

Park officials see definite signs that a portion of the roughly 3 million annual visitors to Yellowstone, which crafted a wireless plan in 2008, are finding the lack of cell phone coverage disconcerting.

Park spokesman Al Nash said he routinely fields calls from anxious relatives of Yellowstone visitors unable to contact their loved ones.

"They say, 'My gosh, my niece, daughter or parents went to Yellowstone, and we haven't heard from them for three days,'" he said.?

State Dept: Americans still hostage in Algeria

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is telling Algeria to do everything possible to protect hostages as it seeks to free them from militants at a natural gas complex in the Sahara.

Clinton says that in her conversation Friday with Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal, she underscored that "the utmost care must be taken to preserve innocent life."

The State Department says Americans are still being held hostage, and world leaders have criticized Algeria for its handling of the attack.

Clinton did not criticize the North African country.

The attack, she says, was an "act of terror." She also vows greater U.S.-Algerian counterterrorism cooperation in future.

Enzyme involved in deadly brain tumors identified

Jan. 17, 2013 ? One of the most common types of brain tumors in adults, glioblastoma multiforme, is one of the most devastating. Even with recent advances in surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, the aggressive and invasive tumors become resistant to treatment, and median survival of patients is only about 15 months. In a study published in Neuro-Oncology, researchers at Mayo Clinic identify an important association between the naturally occurring enzyme Kallikrein 6, also known as KLK6, and the malignant tumors.

"Our study of Kallikrein 6 showed that higher levels of this enzyme in the tumor are negatively associated with patient survival, and that the enzyme functions by promoting the survival of tumor cells," says senior author Isobel Scarisbrick, Ph.D., of Mayo Clinic's Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The findings introduce a new avenue for potential treatment of deadly glioblastomas: targeting the function of KLK6. The tumor cells became more susceptible to treatment when researchers blocked the receptors where the KLK6 enzyme can dock and initiate the survival signal.

Researchers looked at 60 samples of grade IV astrocytomas -- also known at this stage as glioblastomas -- as well as less aggressive grade III astrocytomas. They found the highest levels of KLK6 were present in the most severe grade IV tumors. Looking at the tumor samples, researchers found higher levels of KLK6 associated with shorter patient survival. Those with the highest levels lived 276 days, and those with lower levels lived 408 days.

"This suggests that the level of KLK6 in the tumor provides a prognosticator of patient survival," Dr. Scarisbrick says.

The group also investigated the mechanism of the enzyme to determine whether it plays a significant role in tumor growth. Researchers also found glioblastoma cells treated in a petri dish with KLK6 become resistant to radiation and chemotherapy treatment.

"Our results show that KLK6 functions like a hormone, activating a signaling cascade within the cell that promotes tumor cell survival," Dr. Scarisbrick says. "The higher the level of the enzyme, the more resistant the tumors are to conventional therapies."

The study is the latest step in Dr. Scarisbrick's investigations of KLK6 in nervous system cells known as astrocytes. Glioblastomas arise from astrocytes that have grown out of control. Her lab has shown that KLK6 also plays a role in the perseverance of inflammatory immune cells that occur in multiple sclerosis and in aberrant survival of T-lymphocyte leukemia cell lines.

"Our findings in glioma affirm KLK6 as part of a fundamental physiological mechanism that's relevant to multiple diseases and have important implications for understanding principles of tissue regeneration," she says. "Targeting KLK6 signaling may be a key to the development of treatments for pathologies in which it is necessary to intervene to regulate cell survival and tissue regeneration in a therapeutic fashion. Ultimately, we might be able to harness the power of KLK6 for the repair of damaged organs."

The study was funded by a National Institutes of Health Brain Tumor SPORE grant, an NIH Mayo Neuro-oncology Training Grant and a grant from the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke. By Marti Gacioch

For fitness fans seeking a red-hot workout geared to quickly burn calories and tone the body in a short amount of time, Pilates Plus La Jolla, at 7712 Fay Ave., could become your workout haven.

The company offers an intense Pilates resistance training and circuit-training workout on its ProFormer machine, and spinning sessions on a stationary bicycle.

?In a 40-minute Pilates workout session, you?ll reach muscle fatigue,? said Monika Haggenmuller, studio manager/instructor, ?and with a 15-minute spinning class (cardiovascular exercise) you can burn from 500 to 700 calories each class.?

The circuit-training workout combines a couple of different exercises into one, so students gain a full-body workout on one machine. ?When you work on building your core strength, you focus on the hips, the abdomen, the thighs and the buttocks,? Haggenmuller said.

She also listed the many benefits of a Pilates? workout: It is time-efficient and strengthens the body, improves athletic performance, tightens muscles, elongates muscles and improves postural alignment. It also reduces risk of injury because it strengthens bones building balance and stability.

Pilates classes accommodate up to nine students and the spinning classes hold up to 15.

All classes are open to both men and women, and private and semi-private (two or more people) sessions are available.

It is recommended students exercise three times per week.

Pilates Plus La Jolla offers both individual 40-minute Pilates classes and 15-minute spinning classes, as well as a combination class that includes 25-minutes of each exercise.

?We have every age group, 20-65, and we have private sessions for people a little bit older. Most of our students are in their 40s and 50s,? Haggenmuller said.

Jessica Tomson, owner/instructor, opened Pilates Plus La Jolla nearly four years ago, and it has been at its current Fay Avenue location since July 2012. ?Jessica is passionate about health and helping others gain overall wellness and body awareness,? Haggenmuller said.

Pilates Plus La Jolla is now offering a first class session for $10. Their All-Access Package includes the first month of unlimited Pilates and spinning sessions for $149. Students may book all of their classes on-line by visiting pilatespluslajolla.com and logging in.

Loathsome nanny-state mayor: I don?t ?force anybody to do anything?

posted at 12:41 pm on January 17, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

Behold the delusional vanity of the man who knows what?s best for eight million Americans (300 million, if God forbid, he could rise that far). Mayor Michael Bloomberg was asked if he remembers when he became an anti-gun crusader:

No, but I did get interested in public health a long time ago, as you know. And I think, as mayor, my responsibility is to do everything I can is to do everything I can to protect the health and safety and increase the longevity of the people that live in this city. As an American, and as a human being, I have a responsibility to not push, to not force anybody to do anything but to explain what I think and to educate people to the extent of what I believe that would be in their self-interest.

When he has used government power to restrict distribution of pain pills, ban Big Gulps, extract every trans-fat, and eliminate even outdoor smoking, he was merely explaining his point of view so convincingly that the entirety of his giant city was successfully converted at the point of a sword wonder of his intellect. One wonders how many people he?d convince without a police force.

As Bloomberg once said of this form of persuasion in a moment of greater candor: ?We?re just forcing you to understand.?

If only he?d been more intent on persuading city services and infrastructure to be prepared for Hurricane Sandy.
