Political forecasting stirs up a storm

The presidential campaigns are continuing to wage an aggressive back and forth, especially in Ohio. But the devastating impact of Sandy will likely put a wrench in many East Coast residents' plans to vote, as well as the tallying of those votes. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

By Alan Boyle

Nationwide polls may portray the presidential campaign as a neck-and-neck horse race, but less conventional data-crunching methods spit out a different picture, with President Barack Obama edging out GOP challenger Mitt Romney.

One big variable remains to be factored in: the effect of Hurricane Sandy. And one big state that's been relatively unaffected by the storm holds the key to the outcome: Ohio.?"It's been that way for the entire election cycle," said David Rothschild, an expert on opinion modeling at Microsoft Research and Columbia University's Applied Statistics Center.

Rothschild, who lays out election forecasts at the Predictwise website and blogs about prediction science on The Signal at Yahoo, surveyed the state of the art this weekend at the New Horizons in Science symposium, presented as part of the ScienceWriters2012 conference.

In the final days of the campaign, the divergent spins on the election outlook have sparked a few fireworks. Statistician Nate Silver's analysis for The New York Times' Five Thirty Eight column, which has consistently favored Obama even as many others were reporting a tightening of the race, drew criticism from the National Review's Josh Jordan for including "a little bit too much hope?of an Obama victory against what appears to be a surge of Romney momentum."

This week, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough virtually called for Silver's pundit license to be revoked.?"Anybody that thinks that this race is anything but a tossup right now is such an ideologue they should be kept away from typewriters, computers, laptops and microphones for the next 10 days, because they're jokes," he said on "Morning Joe."

Economist Paul Krugman went to Silver's defense in his own column for the Times, decrying the "war on objectivity" and saying that "all the election modelers have been faithful to their models, letting the numbers fall where they may."

"This is really scary," Krugman wrote. "It means that if these people triumph, science ? or any kind of scholarship ? will become impossible. Everything must pass a political test; if it isn't what the right wants to hear, the messenger is subjected to a smear campaign."

Silver's analysis is based on a state-by-state assessment of polling data from multiple sources, translated into an electoral vote count. Political prediction markets, such as those studied by Rothschild, use a different method to come up with a surprisingly similar snapshot of the horse race.

The markets offer a glorified kind of gambling on political fortunes: The winner-take-all markets let players "invest" in the prospects of a particular candidate. If the candidate wins, the investor gets, say, $1 a share. If the candidate loses, the investor gets nothing. Leading up to Election Day, investors can buy or sell shares in candidates to match their expectations of success.

The shifting share prices reflect the perceived probability of success. For example, Intrade's market?sets the probability of Obama's re-election at 63 percent. The Iowa Electronic Markets?go with a little more than 63 percent, while the trading at?Betfair?puts the probability at?70 percent. That's in the same ballpark as Silver's 72.9 percent estimate.

IEM / Univ. of Iowa

A chart shows share values on the Iowa Electronic Markets in the winner-take-all market for the presidential popular vote. The blue line indicates Democratic share prices, while the red line indicates GOP share prices.

Intentions vs. expectations
What the prediction markets provide is a probability figure, not a vote share figure. It reflects expectations about a given outcome, just as the Vegas odds reflected the expectation that the Giants would win the World Series, even before they swept the Tigers. There was a chance all the way up to the final out that the Tigers could roar back and take four games in a row to win the series. But in this case, at least, the Vegas marketplace predicted the outcome.

So what's the success rate of prediction markets? How do surveys that gauge expectations perform, compared with traditional surveys that gauge what voters say they intend to do? That's where Rothschild's research comes in: He and a colleague, Penn economist Justin Wolfers, looked at the predictions produced by traditional polls ("For whom do you intend to vote?"), as opposed to less traditional surveys ("Whom do you expect to win?"), in 345 political races.

Most of the time, the predictions from the two types of forecasts were in agreement. But in those cases where the predictions were different, the expectation survey was right 76 percent of the time, while the traditional intention survey was right only 24 percent of the time.

Rothschild said the strength of expectation polls may lie in the fact that investors can absorb information from other sources to come up with a consensus that reflects the wisdom of crowds. "Asking people about expectations is equivalent to as if people went out to 10 random voters and reported the binary result," he said.

Based on the prediction markets, it's as if Obama is the favored team in the seventh game of the World Series. The betting odds have been in his favor for the past year ??even though there have been ups and downs, such as his slump in the first presidential debate. Now that all the debates are done, most of the uncertainty has been wrung out of the campaign.

"There's one more unexpected event: this hurricane," Rothschild said.

After the storm
Lots of prognosticators have pointed to the uncertainties raised by Hurricane Sandy. The conventional wisdom was that Romney would benefit from a long-recognized anti-incumbent effect in late pre-election polling, as well as a race-tightening effect. However, Sandy changes the calculus.

"Generally, natural disasters benefit incumbents," Rothschild said. There's a tendency to put politics aside, rally 'round the flag and let the president look presidential. (That effect can go negative if the disaster response doesn't go well, as President George W. Bush found out in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.) Even before the storm hit, Scarborough said Romney's momentum could stall in Sandy's aftermath. "It changes everything with a week to go," he said.

There's already some evidence that the rally effect has kicked in: For example, today New Jersey's Republican governor, Chris Christie, said hat Obama's response to the storm crisis was "outstanding" and that he didn't "give a damn about Election Day." Christie is due to tour devastated areas with the president on Wednesday.

The catastrophic aftermath of the storm may affect early voting as well as the Election Day turnout in places like New York and New Jersey. That could cut into the Democratic vote. Research has shown that obstacles to voting tend to hit Democrats harder than Republicans. But in Sandy's case, that statistical effect may not be critical because those states are relatively safe for Obama.

Sandy's effect may be more crucial hundreds of miles from the worst of the storm, in Ohio. For the past year, Ohio has been the "flip state" in Rothschild's calculations. Neither candidate has a clear path to victory unless he wins Ohio's electoral votes, Rothschild said. That's one reason why Romney was the headliner for a storm-relief rally in Ohio today ? and why Vice President Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton are canvassing the state while Obama tours the hurricane zone.

How will it all turn out? There are lots of statistical models floating around, and no matter which way it turns out, some will score a home run while others will strike out. In addition to the political prediction markets we've been talking about, here are a few more forecasts to watch:

Top 10 Fitness Trends Picked For 2013 ? CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

Oct. 29, 2012 ? Forget fancy fitness fads. Your body is the only equipment you need for one of the hottest fitness trends: body-weight workouts.

A new survey of fitness trends shows body-weight training, including back-to-basics exercises like push-ups, planks, and pull-ups, is expected to be one of the top 10 fitness trends of 2013.

Researchers say people have been using their own body weight for centuries as a form of resistance training. But this is the first time it has made it into the trend survey, because gyms are now packaging it as part of exercise programs.

?Body-weight exercises are a proven way to get and stay fit,? says researcher Walt Thompson, PhD, of Georgia State University. ?In a time when many people are concerned with cutting expenses, body-weight exercises are a great way to feel great and look toned without a big financial investment.?

Top Fitness Trends Predicted for 2013

Taking the top spot in the fitness trend survey for the sixth year in a row are fitness professionals.

Researchers say education and certification programs for health and fitness professionals are experiencing exponential growth. The number of employed fitness trainers is projected to rise by 29% from 251,400 in 2010 to 311,800 in 2020.

According to the survey, the top 10 fitness trends predicted for 2013 are:

1. Educated, certified, and experienced fitness professionals ? Jobs for fitness workers are expected to rise much faster than the average for all other occupations, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

2. Strength training ? In the No. 2 spot for the second year in a row, strength training continues to be a strong trend. No longer restricted to body building, most people now incorporate some form of weight training to improve or maintain muscle strength.

3. Body-weight training ? Body-weight exercises use minimal equipment and include push-ups, pull-ups, planks, and squats.

4. Children and obesity ? Exercise programs aimed at the problem of childhood obesity are also a major fitness trend. Schools are increasingly partnering with commercial and community-based physical activity programs to prevent and treat rising childhood obesity rates.

5. Exercise and weight loss ? Consistently in the top 20 fitness trends, researchers say most popular diet plans incorporate exercise to encourage weight loss.

6. Fitness programs for older adults ? Fitness clubs are capitalizing on an aging baby boomer generation with age-appropriate exercise programs.

7. Personal training ? As more personal trainers are becoming certified, they are becoming more accessible in a variety of settings, such as corporate wellness, community-based, and medical fitness programs.

8. Functional fitness ? Researchers define functional fitness as using strength training to improve balance, coordination, force, power, and endurance to perform activities of daily living. Functional fitness programs are designed to reflect actual activities done as a function of daily living and are often used in fitness programs for older adults.

9. Core training ? Using equipment like balance balls and wobble boards, core training stresses strength and conditioning of the stabilizing muscles of the mid-section. Researchers say exercising the core muscles in the hips, lower back, and abdomen improves overall stability for daily activities and sports performance.

10. Group personal training ? A boon for budget-conscious clients, personal trainers now often provide services to small groups of two to four people at deep discounts.

The survey was completed by 3,346 health and fitness professionals worldwide and appears in the American College of Sports Medicine?s Health & Fitness Journal.

Hurricane Sandy Delays DreamWorks Animation Quarterly Earnings ...

DreamWorks Animation has rescheduled its third-quarter earnings announcement because of Hurricane Sandy, which landed on the shores of New Jersey with 90 MPH winds Monday night.

STORY: Hurricane Sandy Prompts Several Broadcast Networks to Air Reruns on Monday

DWA had been set to announce quarterly earnings on Tuesday but delayed the event until Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.

While DWA is based in Glendale, Calif., many of the analysts who would presumably take part in a conference with DWA executives to discuss the company's earnings are located in New York, where Hurricane Sandy prompted Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange to shut down trading Monday and Tuesday.

Traumatic consequences long after fall of the Berlin Wall

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? One in three former political prisoners of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) still suffers from sleeping disorders, nightmares and irrational fear. Professor Andreas Maercker from the University of Zurich and PD Matthias Sch?tzwohl from Dresden University of Technology reveal these post-traumatic stress disorders in a study -- the first to examine the post-traumatic consequences in former political prisoners over a period of 15 years.

Previously, there had been a lack of reliable data in Germany on the long-term psychological consequences of political imprisonment in the GDR. Professor Andreas Maercker, Head of the Department of Psychopathology and Clinical Intervention at the University of Zurich, and private lecturer Dr. Matthias Sch?tzwohl, Group Leader at the Clinic and Polyclinic of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Dresden University of Technology, interviewed 146 former political prisoners in the mid-1990s. 15 years later, they studied the majority of those concerned (78 men and 15 women) again.

"To our surprise, post-traumatic stress disorder is still present in a third of the people studied," says Professor Maercker, summing up the results. "While some have recovered compared to 15 years ago, in others the stress disorder has only manifested itself in recent years." In all, such a delayed or recurrent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was apparent in 15 percent. We know from studies from other countries -- mostly on prisoners of war or other victims of violence -- that delayed or recurrent PTSD exists, albeit to a lesser extent. Maercker and Sch?tzwohl's study is the first to demonstrate this for former political prisoners. It appears in the journal Nervenarzt and additional analyses are to be published in the English-language journal Torture.

Decline in dependency on addictive substances

Other psychological disorders that former GDR prisoners suffered from decreased during the 15 years. Specific phobias such as claustrophobia were less common, for instance. The number of people addicted to alcohol and medication also fell. However, the number with acute depression quadrupled to 41 percent of those studied last year. At both time points, a more or less equal number suffered from anxiety disorders such as panic disorder (24 percent last year).

"We made another key discovery: Those affected tend to rate their own psychological condition after their release too poorly in retrospect but their current state more realistically," says PD Sch?tzwohl. From this, the authors conclude that there is no distortion of memory for the purposes of a current desire for compensation, for instance, but rather that psychological factors play a role in the tendency towards a negative life evaluation.

Keen On? The Bosphorus: Is Istanbul The Next Berlin? [TCTV]

Screen Shot 2012-10-24 at 5.10.26 AMEarlier this month, I had the good fortune to attend DLD Bosphorus, an event held in Istanbul and featuring some of the hottest Turkish start-ups and entrepreneurs. It was a memorable evening. Held on the banks of the Bosphorus, at Istanbul's amazing Modern Museum of Art, the DLD event featured a number of leading Turkish entrepreneurs including Sina Afra, the CEO of the private shopping club Markafoni and Sureyya Ciliv, the CEO of the dominant Turkish cellphone provider Turkcell. And after dinner, I was lucky enough to interview both Afra and Ciliv about the local tech scene in Turkey. So what's really happening on the banks of the Bosphorus? I asked two of Turkey's most successful entrepreneurs. Their answers might convince some start-up entrepreneurs to head east - to a place that, literally, bridges Europe with Asia.

How Strategic Planning Leads to Business Growth | Number ...

Every business, at one time or another, is burdened by those unanswered questions. Where are we going? What must this company do to grow? What is our purpose, and how can we turn plans into actions? It?s not uncommon for companies to ignore the importance of a strategic plan, and decide to play it day by day, continually wondering how and when things will improve, or if they will improve at all. Some companies grow when their industry grows, but the best grow through their own strategic initiatives, and it?s these companies that align their goals, objectives and resources, into one cohesive strategic plan. Looking to adopt a strategic plan and unsure of what it entails or why it?s so important? Well, there are some simple and straightforward approaches that all companies must endorse to chart their own path.

What Must a Strategic Plan Include?

For many businesses, strategic planning, operational planning, goals and objectives, are often lumped into one another, and ultimately, become one and the same. However, they simply aren?t, and while each of these plays a specific role, they are all meant to be intertwined into one ultimate goal, to grow the business. So, when it comes to a strategic plan, what must it involve? The strategic plan must provide a roadmap to create separate individual plans. It must provide incentives and empower management and employees to think strategically. It must also include quantifiable and measurable results, and must in the end, bring together the company?s resources to fulfill the overall strategic plan. Granted, there?s a lot to consider. To clarify, we?ll review them and show how each, combined with the other, will provide that much needed roadmap to growth.

Use Either a Vision or Mission Statement to Start the Plan

While some companies use both a vision, and a mission statement, they are quite similar, and ultimately accomplish the same result. A vision statement might include stating where the company, as a whole, wants to go, while a mission statement will declare that the company will be the best at what it does. Since both are similar, either will suffice when it comes to starting the strategic plan. However, one or the other must be present. Therefore, keep the vision, or mission statement, a simple and straightforward declaration of what the ultimate objective of the company is. For instance, a company may declare that its mission statement is to ?be the market leader in consumer electronics?, or be ?the preeminent designer of automotive brake systems?. Whatever the case may be, the statement is a declaration of purpose and intent to the customers and market a company services.

Include a Best Business Practices or Code of Conduct Declaration

Some companies call this step their core values. In essence, this is the basis for determining the company?s most important value propositions. It is a declaration to its employees, customers, and the market it services, that the company will conduct itself in a professional manner. It may involve stating that the company?s core values are its employees, the importance of their customers, and their respect for the environment. Core values are an essential set of criteria that can help define a company?s image, and foster an appreciation and confidence in how it conducts business. It?s essentially a promise from the company, which includes the employees, to establish a code of conduct with respect to how it operates its business.

Start With Company Wide Objectives

This is when the planning starts. Objectives can be broken down into yearly, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly objectives, but are always in tune with the overall goal of business growth. For instance, a company may want to grow its business to $4 million in sales within 5 years. As such, it determines that to accomplish this 5 year objective, it must grow sales by 15% to 20%, year over year. This 5 year objectives would then be broken down into yearly and quarterly objectives. These yearly and quarterly objectives would essentially be considered benchmarks, where progress is assessed and changes are made, if needed. In the case of this 5 year objective, the company will asses its progress quarter by quarter, year by year, and make changes accordingly in order to accomplish its ultimate 5 year goal of $4 million in sales. ?Here are some examples of some objectives a company might determine are essential to its 5 year goal.

  • Increase market share by 5% year over year.
  • Increase gross profit by 5% by year?s end on core products.
  • Reduce inventory costs by 2% quarter over quarter.
  • Introduce two new products a year.

Use Separate Strategies to Achieve Objectives

Now that the objectives have been determined, the company now must determine their specific strategies to accomplish these objectives. What strategies could the company come up with to accomplish some of the objectives listed above? In order to accomplish the goal of increasing market share on new products by 5% yearly, the company might decide to increase its sales efforts or increase the effectiveness of its marketing plans. In the case of growing gross

profit, it could involve negotiating better pricing and strong contractual agreements with suppliers in order to lower the pricing on parts and materials. This would lower the company?s overall cost structure. In addition, those supplier price reductions could also be used to lower the quarterly costs of inventory objective. Strategies must be tied into objectives, and must provide a path to successful completion of those objectives.

Tie Strategies With Objectives Through the Company?s Resources

This is when the company breaks down its objectives and strategies into implementation. To do so, it will determine what company resources are needed. What resources does the company have to accomplish these objectives, and successfully implement the above strategies? In the case of increasing sales efforts to accomplish the 5% growth year over year objective, is there a company resource that can help accomplish this? Sure there is. Perhaps there is a sales person who has had fantastic results using a specific approach. The company could use this person as a resource to help other sales people grow their territories. In terms of improving new product introduction, what engineering and design resources does the company have that could be put to use to accomplish the objective of introducing two new products a year? Using company wide resources to successfully tie in the company?s strategies to its objectives, is not only cost effective, but an essential aspect of strategic planning.

Many companies make singular declarations on growth, without providing their employees and management with any way to disseminate how, why, or who will help accomplish these goals. It?s often these companies, with no clear plan or path, that wonder what went wrong and why their people weren?t able to get the job done. Strategic planning isn?t simply a one line statement. It involves a coordinated effort of the company?s entire workforce and resources to chart a path, and approach to growth.

Ford envisages crime-busting role for new ST-badged estate

24 October, 2012

Ford is trying to persuade Britain?s police forces that the new 250hp Focus ST estate can play a key law-enforcement role.

The firm displayed a police-liveried ST wagon recently at the National Association of Police Officers blue light exhibition in Peterborough, and Terry Adams, Ford?s direct sales and marketing manager for police, fire and ambulance sales, believes its performance, flexibility and load capability provide scope for marked and unmarked operational duty, including rapid response roles.

Some police forces have run the previous-generation ST hatch as an unmarked vehicle.

The Blue Oval?s blue light business generates around 1500 emergency vehicle sales annually, most of them modified to individual forces? requirements by Safeguard Special Vehicle Preparations, based near Colchester, Essex.

Adams said: ?We are in the business of providing bespoke cars and vans, and unlike other companies we do not distress our emergency services? vehicle sales.

"We know how demanding police forces are of their vehicles, which must be high performers on all fronts, and issues like upgraded brakes and suspensions are part of that service.

?The ST takes Ford from its historic role as a provider of Zephyrs and Zodiacs plus Anglia panda patrol cars to uniform and ?Q? cars [understated high-performance cars] in the case of our new high-performance Focus estate.?

This is first time Ford has produced an ST-badged estate, having previously only three- and five-door versions, although David Calder, Focus product manager, admitted that the ST is unlikely to be more than a ?minority fleet player?.

Church offering class on literature banned by Fremont school board

FREMONT -- A free book club that will focus on critically acclaimed literature banned by the Fremont school board is scheduled to begin Wednesday night at an Irvington district church.

Since 2008, the five-member board has banned "Bastard Out of Carolina," a National Book Award nominee about a teenage girl sexually abused by her stepfather, and last year it rejected "Angels in America," a Pulitzer Prize-winning play about AIDS in the 1980s.

In response to the censorship, Mission Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation hired Teri Hu -- a Washington High teacher who tried unsuccessfully to add those books to the school's AP English supplemental reading list -- to lead the new monthly club.

The eight-part course is open to the public, including Fremont students, said the Rev. Jeremy Nickel, the church's minister. Copies of the censored books will be on sale at the sessions, and some free copies will be provided to those who cannot afford to purchase them, Nickel said.

The course will ask participants to complete assigned reading that they will discuss at a monthly meeting. The first session is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Cole Hall, next to the Fremont church at 2950 Washington Blvd., Nickel said.

"This is about educating the community about what's inside these books," he said.

Nickel, who did not disclose Hu's salary for leading the course, praised the instructor for her persistence regarding the banned books.

She

is attempting "to give these young people a chance to wrestle with the full spectrum of humanity in a safe environment, before they are on their own making these decisions in real time, with real consequences," Nickel said. "And equipping them with the moral muscles to make the right decisions is what happens when they explore transforming works ... and then discuss them with their peers, teachers and parents."

Hu -- a Fremont Unified School District teacher for the past 15 years -- said she submitted the same books for approval for about a decade and experienced no problems. That changed in 2008, when the school board rejected "Bastard Out of Carolina" -- even though it had been approved by a district textbook committee. When Hu resubmitted the title in 2009 and 2010, the board rejected it again and passed a rule that books could not be submitted in consecutive years. Last year, she submitted "Angels in America," which also was not approved.

Despite the repeated rejections, Hu said will continue submitting them for approval.

"It's like they don't want our children to read modern, relevant books," she said. "I am not giving up."

Ivy Wu, a school board member since 2004, said she voted to censor the works because she believes most Fremont parents do not want those mature themes featured in the school curriculum. "I'm not saying social issues should not be taught in classrooms, but these books are too graphic," she said. "It's unsettling for these parents."

Wu said she encourages parents and students to attend the church's monthly course to learn more about the banned books. "It can be done better if it's in a different setting, outside of the classroom," she said.

Choosing Contemporary Doors | Home Improvement

It is important to choose the right doors for your home. If you don?t, you could end up having contemporary doors for a traditional house or vice versa, some people don?t really care but there are those who are very particular. Contemporary doors are perfect for houses with modern aesthetics and look sleek, simple and clean. The choice of door material varies although timber doors and fiberglass doors are the most common. When choosing this kind of door, three considerations are needed: appearance, construction and quality.

Appearance of the door is the foremost consideration. If the door will not contribute to the house design or blend it, it defeats the purpose. This is especially true for exterior doors. The visual impact of the door must be appropriate because it will complete the overall look. The construction of the door is vital because if it will not function properly, it will be useless in the long run. A buyer must bear this in mind and not just appearance. Some people forget to ask about the construction of the door because they are entranced by its outward beauty. The quality of the door includes a warranty, and wood and timber doors often come with manufacturer?s warranty for a number of years. But you have to be sure what is covered in the warranty. The fine print can be lost on some people and it may prove to be worthless in the end. Contemporary doors are ideal for both exterior and interior doors.

Don?t buy the first contemporary door you see.

How Do You Measure Productivity In Your Staffing Business?

How do you measure productivity at your place? Most jobs filled, most calls made, shortest time-to-fill, cost-per-hire? According to?Harvard Lecturer Robert Pozen, you might be getting productivity all wrong. He says we put too much emphasis on ?dashboard metrics? and not enough on quality. How Do You Measure Productivity In Your Staffing Business?

Pozen knows a little about the subject. Over the last five years, he taught a full course load at Harvard Business School while serving as the full-time chairman of a global financial-services firm. He wrote three books and published roughly 100 articles in that period, served on the boards of large companies such as Medtronic and maintained a strong relationship with his wife and kids.

And before that, while teaching at Harvard Law School, Pozen was asked in 2003 by Governor Mitt Romney to serve as secretary of economic affairs, to oversee economic-related state agencies. Pozen said they took a $3 billion deficit, and in one year eliminated it by reducing spending, and raising revenue (without raising tax rates) through an increase in user fees and the closing of tax loopholes. Sound familiar?

Anyway, Pozen is a productive person without a doubt, and now, in?his new book, ?Extreme Productivity,? he gives some excellent tips on how we can maximize productivity every day.

For example, he recommends using the 80/20 rule with email (only open 20 percent, and respond immediately), and says we should devote most of our time to other, high-priority tasks.

Use the 80/20 rule with email (only open 20 percent, and respond immediately), and devote most of your time to other, high-priority tasks.

Pozen tells us that many company owners and managers will say something like ?Here are the top five priorities for this firm,? and then propose they carry out each one. He says while that may be the right answer, it?s the wrong question, because it focuses on what that person does best, rather than what the firm most needs from them. So Pozen posits that the correct question instead for the owner or manager is, ?Which function can only I perform??

How Do You Measure Productivity In Your Staffing Business?

Robert Pozen

The book is broken down into five main parts, each with two or three chapters. Part I is about setting goals with explicit priorities. Part II is organizing your daily routine. Part III is working on personal skills. Part IV is organizational challenges and Part V is long-term career and business decisions.

  • Articulate your goals and rank then in order of priority
  • Focus on the final product
  • Don?t sweat the small stuff and spend as little time on low-priority items as possible
  • Figure out how you really spend your time
  • Understand and address the misalignment between goals and time allocations

Modern applicant tracking systems make it easy to run reports and generate lots of data. With things such as time-to-fill reports you can easily calculate short-term productivity and measure the effectiveness of particular initiatives such as targeted advertising campaigns, or a social media push.?These metrics for the most part are easy to understand and they can also help you identify trends.

Metrics can also be distracting though. Like the CEO of a publicly traded company who could drive themselves crazy looking at the stock price all day long, in your never-ending race to ?fill orders,? long-term investments in process improvements and true productivity can seem less important.

What do you think? Do you race from meeting to meeting, call to call, without giving much thought to the rationale or the reason? Are you comfortable reflecting on your priorities? Would you rather simply constantly respond to urgent requests from co-workers and clients? Do you feel like there is alignment between your highest ranking goals and priorities and how you actually spend your time?

Heritage Foundation List of Failing or At-Risk Taxpayer Energy ...

The Heritage Foundation (founded?1980) is a think-tank leader in the current debate over energy policy and related environmental issues. Heritage?s?energy worldview is stated?at their website:

Energy and environmental policy is a national priority. Lawmakers should implement a long-term plan that allows free markets to balance supply and demand, ensures reliable and competitively priced energy for the future, and creates incentives for responsible stewardship of the nation?s resources and environment.

A recent report, ?President Obama?s Taxpayer-Based Green Energy Failures,? lists 34 examples of ?faltering or bankrupt green-energy companies? (with * denoting companies that have filed for bankruptcy). The at-risk total is approximately $7.5 billion, of which $1.6? billion is in receivership.

The numbers will only get higher. Yesterday, it was reported that the Solyndra loss could be $849 million (not $535 million). And there might be a rush after the election with or without an extension of the Production Tax Credit.

Here is the Heritage Foundation list:

  1. Evergreen Solar ($25 million)*
  2. SpectraWatt ($500,000)*
  3. Solyndra ($535 million)*
  4. Beacon Power ($43 million)*
  5. Nevada Geothermal ($98.5 million)
  6. SunPower ($1.2 billion)
  7. First Solar ($1.46 billion)
  8. Babcock and Brown ($178 million)
  9. EnerDel?s subsidiary Ener1 ($118.5 million)*
  10. Amonix ($5.9 million)
  11. Fisker Automotive ($529 million)
  12. Abound Solar ($400 million)*
  13. A123 Systems ($279 million)*
  14. Willard and Kelsey Solar Group ($.7 million)
  15. Johnson Controls ($299 million)
  16. Schneider Electric ($86 million)
  17. Brightsource ($1.6 billion)
  18. ECOtality ($126.2 million)
  19. Raser Technologies ($33 million)*
  20. Energy Conversion Devices ($13.3 million)*
  21. Mountain Plaza, Inc. ($2 million)*
  22. Olsen?s Crop Service and Olsen?s Mills Acquisition Company ($10 million)*
  23. Range Fuels ($80 million)*
  24. Thompson River Power ($6.5 million)*
  25. Stirling Energy Systems ($7 million)*
  26. Azure Dynamics ($5.4 million)*
  27. GreenVolts ($500,000)
  28. Vestas ($50 million)
  29. LG Chem?s subsidiary Compact Power ($151 million)
  30. Nordic Windpower ($16 million)*
  31. Navistar ($39 million)
  32. Satcon ($3 million)*
  33. Konarka Technologies, Inc. ($20 million)
  34. Mascoma Corp. ($100 million)

The report?s conclusion speaks to the above, but it also wise words for other government forays into for-profit areas where a vibrant market exists:

The government?s picking winners and losers in the energy market has cost taxpayers billions of dollars, and the rate of failure, cronyism, and corruption at the companies receiving the subsidies is substantial. The fact that some companies are not under financial duress does not make the policy a success. It simply means that our taxpayer dollars subsidized companies that would?ve found the financial support in the private market.

Next Cobra Gold exercise could include Myanmar military observers

Stars and Stripes

Published: October 23, 2012

Military officials from Myanmar, who have been slowly introducing reforms after being criticized for years for human rights abuses, may be invited to joint exercises with the United States next year, Defense Department officials said.

Up to three military officers could be invited to attend the 32nd annual Cobra Gold exercise in Thailand in February, according to Maj. Cathy Wilkinson, Defense Press Officer for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs. The officers would take part in the exercise strictly in an observation role.

The exercise is led by Thailand, which invites the participants, Wilkinson said. The country shares a border with Myanmar, also known as Burma.

?The United States is open to considering a request from the Kingdom of Thailand to have a small contingent of Burmese military officers attend Cobra Gold as observers, to observe the humanitarian assistance/disaster relief or military medical portion of the exercise ? as long as it is consistent with U.S. efforts to advance protection of human rights, civilian control of the military, anti-corruption efforts and other reform issues,? Wilkinson said. ?It?s all still in the early phase; no decisions or invitations have been made.?

Reclusive Myanmar has been run by a repressive military junta, which crushed a 1988 uprising. But it has begun opening up after five decades of isolation under its new president, an ex-general who served as prime minister under the former regime and has begun to reform the economy. The United States and Europe have lifted most sanctions against Myanmar.

Due to reforms in the country, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton pledged last month to normalize the commercial relationship between Myanmar and the U.S. and begin the process of easing restrictions on imports of Burmese goods, according to a State Department statement. The comments that opened the door to the possibility of inviting Myanmar to Cobra Gold were originally made Friday by Pentagon Press Secretary George Little.

Cobra Gold is the United States? largest multilateral exercise in the Asia-Pacific region.

In 2012, it featured a computer-simulated command-post exercise, field training operations and humanitarian and civic-assistance projects, according to an Army statement. About 10,000 servicemembers from the U.S., Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea participated.

Miguel Cabrera gets in his licks, and his laughs

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:43 p.m. ET Oct. 21, 2012

(Eds: Updates with quotes, details. With AP Photos.)

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Tigers were in the middle of a workout for the World Series when comedian George Lopez showed up and began milling around near home plate. Almost instantly, Miguel Cabrera was beside him, laughing it up and looking as excited as he'd been all afternoon.

"He likes to have fun," teammate Quintin Berry said. "He enjoys himself. He loves being here, and he likes the loose environment. I understand him having a lot of fun with George and stuff because that's the same kind of person he is."

Baseball's first Triple Crown winner in 45 years seems to enjoy hitting and joking around in equal proportion. Fans are plenty familiar with Cabrera's talent - his consistently high average and awe-inspiring power - but the rest of the Tigers appreciate him for more than that.

Cabrera may be shy in front of a camera or microphone, but there's a goofy side to the third baseman that helps keep his team upbeat.

Now in the prime of his career at 29, Cabrera's approach remains meticulous, but he's careful not to take himself or his job too seriously.

"Besides the business, it's a game. I think baseball is a very fine game and you have to enjoy it," Cabrera said recently. "You have to go out there and have fun. Don't get me wrong, you have to be serious at the same time, but I think when you have a team and try to have fun and get loose before the game and between innings, I think it helps you play good. That's the way I've played since I was a kid."

Cabrera and the Tigers open the World Series on Wednesday. It will be his first trip to the Fall Classic since he was a 20-year-old rookie in 2003 and his Florida Marlins beat the New York Yankees.

Cabrera played all over the field in that postseason - third base, left field, right field, even three innings at shortstop. After being traded to the Tigers before the 2008 season, he eventually settled in at first base. Detroit acquired the Venezuelan for his bat, after all, not his glove.

"He was a good hitter before we ever got him," manager Jim Leyland said. "I mean, nobody here taught Miguel Cabrera anything about hitting."

Still, even the Tigers had to be amazed by what Cabrera did this season. His .330 average, 44 home runs and 139 RBIs made him the first Triple Crown winner since 1967.

"I told him that a Latino winning the Triple Crown is as impressive as having a black president," Lopez said during his visit with the team Saturday.

During the final days of the Triple Crown chase, Cabrera did his best to deflect the pressure and the attention.

"I kind of want to stay away from baseball when I go home," he said. "I want to see movies ... try to play with my kids, try and forget baseball for a little bit."

As outgoing as he can be, Cabrera doesn't always look comfortable when talking to reporters, especially when asked to talk about himself. It wasn't long ago he seemed on the verge of wasting his prodigious talent, when he was arrested at the start of spring training in 2011 - he later pleaded no contest to drunken driving.

General manager Dave Dombrowski said Cabrera has worked hard to overcome his off-field problems.

"I think he's grown in abundance," Dombrowski said. "Just some of the things that when you're a youngster, you need to learn, and the only way you learn is through experience, and he's done that. So we see him in a much more comfortable place - his growth as a family man, his growth on the field as a leader."

Perhaps the best example of Cabrera's team-first mentality came when he moved to third base this year to accommodate newly signed first baseman Prince Fielder. Cabrera's range isn't particularly good, and the adjustment got off to a rocky start when he was hit around the eye with a bad-hop grounder during spring training.

It would have been easy for a player of Cabrera's stature to call off the experiment after that scary injury, but he never did.

"He's a very tough individual," Dombrowski said. "He continued his hard work. I can't say he wasn't concerned, but we were more concerned than him at the time."

Some of Cabrera's quirkier habits may be on display for a national audience once the World Series starts. Watch him after a checked swing. He might signal toward first base himself, as if expecting the umpire to cut him some slack if he appeals the play before the catcher.

Cabrera is focused whenever he steps on the field. The Tigers were scrimmaging Sunday at Comerica Park, and when Cabrera stepped up, he used the plate to help mark off exactly where he wanted to stand, since there was no marked batter's box.

Cabrera is all about details. But make no mistake, he has fun along the way.

"He tries not to worry about anything," Berry said. "He gets bothered if everybody starts worrying too much. He just wants everybody to relax and believe in yourselves. That's pretty much what I take from him."
