A Sampling of Texas' Overblown Reactions to Obamacare Ruling

At the end of the day yesterday, the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation sent a dispatch from its president, Brook Rawlings, reacting to the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act.

"Make no mistake," Rawlings wrote. "This outcome is a net negative for every Texan -- and every American -- concerned with liberty and prosperity." Never mind that many of the millions of Texans who will have health coverage because of the law presumably also value liberty and prosperity. This is an ongoing battle for freedom.

We are in for the long haul. We understand what the Supreme Court has done. But we are not defeated. You see, we've been here before. We are Texans. We know what it's like to be in the most dire straits. Our forefathers held the line -- and lost -- at Refugio, San Patricio, Agua Dulce, Coleto, and the Alamo.

So, the fight against the health care law equivalent is being compared to an armed insurrection? Others used language that was slightly less martial. Rick Perry called the decision "a stomach punch to the American economy." Comptroller Susan Combs called it an "attack on personal liberty."

Tyler Rep. Louie Gohmert, "visibly angry," at least steered clear of overtly violent imagery on the steps of the Supreme Court.

When in the course of human events it becomes clear that you have people who will not follow the law, it's time to use orderly methods set forth in the Constitution to remove them from their offices, and get people who will abide by their oaths.

Then he called Obama and Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan liars and called for an investigation of the latter.

The overblown rhetoric isn't particularly surprising given the tone of the debate over the past two years, but I was naive enough to expect that the Supreme Court's decision on health care would inspire a brief round of bloviation but ultimately quiet the debate, allow Texas to get around to implementing the insurance exchanges it's been dragging its feet on and deciding whether to implement

Instead, it looks like there will be an concerted and painfully prolonged effort by Republicans to repeal the law despite the fact that, with the makeup of the Senate what it is, the chances of that happening are nil.

The Affordable Care Act is deeply flawed. It's a messy compromise that completely satisfies no one, it doesn't really solve ballooning healthcare costs, and its a windfall for insurance companies. But it's not a step toward communism, it's not going to kill the economy, and it's not an assault on personal liberty. So it's time to take a deep breath and move on.

A tomato by any other gene: Just as sweet? (+video)

New research shows that the bland flavor of a popular variety of firm tomatoes is caused by a genetic switch. Locating this switch may enable scientists to create good-tasting and good-shipping tomatoes in the future. ?

Using genetics, scientists have been able to dig up the dirt on why homegrown?tomatoes taste so much sweeter than the ones in the supermarket.

Researchers found a genetic switch responsible for some of the sugar production within a?tomato. A new study in Friday's edition of Science found that the common type of?tomato?bred for firmness and good shipping also inadvertently turns off the sugar-producing switch. That makes it less sweet and blander than garden varieties.

University of California Davis plant scientist Ann Powell said knowing the genetics behind the sugar-making could lead someday to development of sweeter?tomatoes?that also travel well.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft may have no interest in owning an English soccer club, but he definitely wants to see someone own an English NFL franchise.

According to Neil Reynolds of Sky Sports, Kraft has said during a speaking engagement in England he believes the NFL should have a team in London.

?I personally think we should have a franchise in London and that is something I am going to push for,? Kraft said.? ?I think I said that the last time we were over here in 2009 and before this next decade is out, I hope we have a team here.? I think that would be right for the NFL and this fan base has proven they deserve it.?

And by rewarding the fan base in England, the NFL will be rewarding itself.

?I think we?re starting to tap out in the United States,? Kraft said.? ?If you look at the last Super Bowl we were in this past season, we had over 180 million people watching ? that?s almost two thirds of America.? So for us to grow the game, we have to expand globally.? Having seen the kind of support we have received here in London, it is the intention of the NFL owners to get two games here, starting next year.?

Of course, when it comes to moving an existing team, Kraft isn?t willing to put his money machine where his mouth is.

?The only bad part of putting a franchise in London is that I can assure you it won?t be the Patriots who are moving here,? Kraft said.

So who will it be?? At a time when many believe the Rams are destined to finagle their way out of a lease in St. Louis, it?s presumed they?ll return to Los Angeles.? But with the Rams throwing their hands in the air with Horshackian zeal to play three homes games in London over the next three years, they?re at the top of the short list of potential candidates to make the move.

The possibility of sending the Rams or any other team to London comes with plenty of question marks.? But there?s an exclamation point to be realized if/when more of the people who don?t live in the United States develop a true passion for the NFL.? What is a billion-dollar business could become, sooner rather than later, a trillion-dollar endeavor.

No successful enterprise is content to tread water.? For the NFL, the possibility exists for exponential growth, once the sport officially begins crossing the various bodies of water that surround our borders via the permanent placement of teams on the other side.

MediaTek MT6577 helps push dual-core Android 4.0 smartphones under $200 contract-free

MediaTek MT6577 helps push dualcore Android 40 smartphones under $200 contractfree

It isn't hard to get an Android 4.0 phone under $200 if you're willing to sign your life away with a contract. Getting one that's worthwhile at that same figure contract-free, however, requires some jumping through hoops. MediaTek must be an acrobat, as it just released the MT6577, a chip design for the most entry level of smartphones. The part's frugal focus doesn't keep it from stuffing in a dual-core, 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, a PowerVR SGX series 5 for graphics and an HSPA modem for 3G. Those specifications would only have been cutting-edge in 2011, but they're very speedy for a starter device in 2012 -- fast enough to drive Google's OS on a 720p screen while supporting 1080p video. The MT6577 is a drop-in replacement for its MT6575 ancestor, and it's accordingly going to be used very quickly by "leading global customers" this summer. Knowing MediaTek's most recent clients, that could soon lead to a sea of very affordable phones from Gigabyte, ZTE and others that have no problems eating an Ice Cream Sandwich.

Syria's Assad faces growing rebel, foreign threat

LONDON, June x (Reuters) - With a high profile attack on a government TV station, escalating fighting around Damascus and talk of increasing covert foreign support, Syria's rebels are bringing the fight ever closer to Bashar Al Assad.

In a speech on Tuesday night, Assad said the country was now "at war" and that all sectors of the government and country must devote their energies to the war effort. A string of recent military defections suggest even some of his supporters may have had enough, but most analysts and foreign officials believe his government could cling on well into 2013.

With the shooting down of a Turkish reconnaissance jet on Friday the latest sign of the creeping internationalization of the conflict, there are growing signs outside powers may be dragged in ever deeper whether they want to or not.

For now, few believe there is any imminent prospect of the kind of foreign military intervention seen last year to oust Libya's leader Muammar Gaddafi. But one lesson from last year almost certainly does carry across, analysts say: that the true endgame, if it comes, will be in the capital.

In Libya, opposition fighters with smuggled and parachuted weapons and supported by Arab and Western special forces advisers swept into Tripoli often unchallenged. Such scenes in Syria, however, could still be a relatively long way away.

"Damascus is key - it's the place where you can cut the head off the snake," says David Hartwell, Middle East analyst at IHS Jane's. "The attack on the television station is obviously a new departure... but there have been attacks and uprisings in Damascus before that haven't led to anything. The question is whether they can continue it."

According to Syrian state media, opposition fighters stormed the compound of pro-government broadcaster Ikhbariya, located 20 km (15 miles) south of the capital, destroying a building and shooting dead three employees.

Tuesday also saw unprecedented levels of fighting elsewhere in Damascus suburbs including around the headquarters of the Republican Guard, although it appeared to ease again on Wednesday.

In principle, world powers remain committed to the diplomacy of former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan. But some diplomats believe international talks on Syria scheduled for this weekend in Geneva may not even take place, so great are the divisions.

Despite western hopes that Russia might be persuaded to abandon long-time ally Assad, Moscow appears determined to back him - making it clear it intended to ensure delivery of several attack helicopters despite widespread condemnation.

At the same time, having initially held back, Western states and particularly Arab nations appear to be stepping up support for the rebels.

Turkey is allowing the Free Syrian Army safe haven within its territory. Following the jet incident it may well be willing to increase its own support and allow nations to do the same.

"My sense is that the (Turkish jet) shootdown certainly escalates regional tensions and increases the possibility over the horizon for (longer term) military intervention," said Mona Yacoubian, a former US State Department official and now Middle East adviser at Washington DC think tank the Stimson Centre.

INTERVENTION HUGELY DIFFICULT

Earlier this month, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said rather than looking for a Libya-style campaign, foreign powers should see Syria as more akin to 1990s Bosnia.

That, some including foreign office officials believe, was aimed at suggesting that regardless of intent, other states including Britain might ultimately be forced to become militarily engaged.

But a serious intervention could require tens of thousands of troops, comparable to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. With Western states in particular exhausted by recent wars and economic woes, enthusiasm is limited.

The fact that a Turkish jet was blown from the sky with such apparent ease, experts warn, is a potent reminder of the risks.

Only the United States could inflict the kind of overwhelming assault on Syria's air defenses necessary to open the door for broader action. That could require two aircraft carriers and likely dozens or more other aircraft from Turkish, Cypriot and other bases, military sources say.

Syria's air defenses are far more powerful than the those of Gaddafi's Libya last year or Saddam Hussein's Iraq in 2003. U.S. air forces have not taken on such a task at least since Kosovo in 1999.

"It would be exceptionally difficult to establish a no-fly zone," said one Western military source on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak on the topic to the press.

"Any form of 'safe haven' would demand high end war fighting capabilities and a very large ground force - almost certainly beyond the capabilities of any potential interveners given recent cuts in defense spending."

The bulk of any ground force entering Syria would almost certainly have to come from Turkey - and that is a prospect that officials in Ankara are seen very keen to avoid.

While much of Gaddafi's military in Libya melted away in the early stages of the revolution, Syria's military is much more dominated by the Alawite minority and is seen likely to fight much harder including against any foreign forces.

If Assad were to fall or flee abroad, some analysts believe the country would simply collapse further into chaos. Foreign states could then be confronted not just by the danger of Al Qaeda-linked militants moving in but also the prospect of even more ethnic violence.

Without Assad, the Alawite minority in particular could find itself victim of revenge attacks following reported massacres in Sunni areas in recent weeks.

"The challenges surrounding Syria go well beyond Assad," says Aram Nerguizian, a visiting fellow and the Syria expert at Washington DC think tank the Centre For Strategic and International Studies.

"The post-colonial Syrian experiment is still coming undone... The long term socio-economic, political and sectarian challenges... could take years if not decades to play out."

GROWING COVERT SUPPORT?

Despite such longer-term worries, however, there are growing signs that the West and Arab states have decided that helping push the FSA towards victory may be the only option.

"I still don't think that Western powers will intervene," says Christopher Steinitz, Middle East analyst at the Centre for Naval Analysis outside Washington, part of the U.S. government-funded think tank CNA.

"No one will go it alone. Frankly, I think all parties at this point continue to see vague, covert support for the opposition as a winning strategy. There is no need for direct intervention."

Although official confirmation is inevitably absent, there has been growing talk of foreign special forces - particularly British, but perhaps also US, Qatari, French and others - operating in Turkey's border Hatay province.

On Tuesday, Israeli-based website Debkha suggested British special forces had actually entered Syrian territory proper, presumably alongside rebel forces. For now, most experts remain skeptical - but the prospect may well be growing.

Weapons deliveries to the rebels are also believed to be growing. Most needed, analysts say, would be anti-tank weaponry and perhaps also anti-aircraft missiles - despite worries that they could ultimately fall into the wrong hands.

"It's never going to be officially acknowledged, but I wouldn't be surprised if the CIA and special forces types haven't been operating in Hatay for some time," said Hartwell at IHS Jane's. "I wouldn't have thought they will be operating across the border. But they will be training, coordinating and poring over satellite photos. And after last week, I think the Turks will be a lot less bothered about keeping that secret."

"Mission creep" could prove almost inevitable. If Syria's rebels can emulate their Libyan counterparts and actually seize large areas of territory, they may similarly call for direct air support to hold back Assad's forces.

Accidental or deliberate cross-border firing and growing talk of potential Syrian support for Kurdish PKK guerrillas could drive the Turks to launch at least occasional military strikes, regardless of the actions of Western and Gulf states.

By early next year, whoever occupies the White House - either a re-elected Barack Obama or Republican challenger Mitt Romney - could find himself pushed ever closer to a larger military mission. But that, some warned, could bring with it much larger geopolitical risks.

At worst, as it backs governments in Bahrain and Yemen while opposing them in Syria and Iran, some believe Washington could find itself trapped on one side in a regional confrontation between Sunni and Shi' ite.

"Looking head to a 2013, when Assad is still very likely in power, the prospects of a broader, international military conflict over Syria are looming larger," wrote Ian Bremmer, president of political risk consultancy Eurasia Group.

"Walking Dead" showrunner reveals how it doesn't end

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - (Spoiler alert: Don't read this if you don't want to know anything about what's coming up on "The Walking Dead.")

"Walking Dead" showrunner Glen Mazzara doesn't want to reveal too much about the upcoming third season of the show - but he will say, emphatically, how the entire series won't end.

The Wrap talked with Mazzara during a crucial day of filming of the third season - which is set largely in a prison and features a vicious new villain called the Governor. We noted during the interview that there are generally three types of endings for zombie stories. One involves the survivors finding a safe haven, perhaps by taking a boat -

"No," Mazzara interjected, seeing where we were going. "There is no safe haven in this world. I want to make that clear. At the end of our season 2 finale that farm is overtaken and that farm was that last safe haven, and there's no safe haven in that world. I want to be very clear about that. No one is safe. There is no safe haven."

So Rick Grimes and the other survivors can't just catch a boat to France and -

"Nope. Nope. Nope," Mazzara said. "That's against our internal rules here."

So that settles that.

Mazzara and his cast will provide an extended look at the third season of the hit AMC drama at Comic-Con next month. In the meantime, he told us how closely season 3 will follow the comic books that inspired the show (written by "Walking Dead" executive producer Robert Kirkman), and what it was like to take over the series from original showrunner Frank Darabont.

He also explained why the prison where much of season 3 is set won't feel at all like a safe haven.

Q: Without giving anything away, can you give us a taste of what you're shooting today?

A: "We're actually shooting on a major scene for the entire season, and we're shooting on one of my favorite sets on any show ever."

Q: Would that set be a prison?

A: "Yeah. It's part of the prison set."

Q: You've said that this season you'll be getting into the real meat of the series - Michonne, the Governor, the prison. How closely are you sticking with the comics?

A: "We're taking the major tentpole characters and storylines from the comics and adapting them to our alternate universe of the TV shows. So it will be just as surprising to comic-book fans as to non-comic-book fans as to how all of it lays out."

Q: I loved how you stretched out and heightened the comics' Shane storyline. You really got every little bit of drama out of it that you could.

A: "That's a great template for how we intend to use the comic-book's source material. We need to make it our own."

Q: What are the advantages and disadvantages of shooting inside the prison for so much of the upcoming season?

A: "The prison itself will be a threatening, malevolent character. It is a challenge to live in the prison. And I think we've really been able to get a lot of story out of it. So it will not feel like a safe corner keeping our characters away from central action. It will really play that they are in a shark cage. Life in a prison is life in a shark cage."

Q: How soon before we meet the Governor?

A: "He makes a surprising appearance. I don't want to give anything away as to the exact episode, but the audience will certainly be ready for his appearance - and they won't have to wait too long."

Q: "The Rise of the Governor," the novel last year by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga, made him a somewhat more sympathetic character than he is in the comics. Do you see him as a person who's not necessarily forgivable, but understandable?

A: "We do. I haven't read the novel because I didn't want it to influence my concept of the TV show's version. But we're interested in having a very complex, nuanced, multi-layered character. This will not be simply an arch villain who is committing an evil act in every scene. That's too cartoonish for what we do here. We want that character to feel as real and human and fully developed as possible."

Q: If you stick with what happens in the comics between him and Michonne, it's going to be the most brutal thing on a show that doesn't hold out on violence. Do you feel like you have to temper what's in the comics? Or do you expand on it? Does TV allow you to be more or less graphic?

A: Certainly there's challenging material in the comic book, and I would say there's equally challenging material on our TV show. I think at the end of season 2 we showed that we don't pull punches ... We're not going to get soft now. However, we'll do things on our own time, or when it makes sense for the show. And we're definitely looking at this Governor-Michonne-Woodbury-prison storyline as a longterm arc."

Q: You took over the show from Frank Darabont last season, and in my opinion, the show kept getting better and had some of its best moments. Did you have a sense of where Darabont wanted it to go? And do you ever keep in touch with him through back channels?

A: "We were really focused on breaking season 2. So I think the material that we're using from the comic book, this is our design. I did not know of a longterm plan, so I've used the comic book as something to lean on. I think Robert's done great work there, and we're excited about getting to what I consider the heart of the matter. This Michonne-Governor-prison-Woodbury storyline to me is what equals ?The Walking Dead.'"

Q: There are some serial shows like "Lost," where you think, well, what I ultimately think of this show depends on how they resolve it. Does "The Walking Dead" feel to you like a show that needs a big answer at the end?

A: "That's something that I think about obsessively. There's a component of this show where the audience wants to know, ?What happens next? What happens next?' However, this is not a show that is based on revelation. This is a show that is based on character action. And I think as long as we stay true to our characters - and the show rests on Rick's shoulders right now - as long as we're true to the spirit of those characters and true to the spirit of Robert Kirkman's original work, I think that's how we should be judged."

"It's not about necessarily having an answer that sums it all up with a pretty bow. This show is more about how these people survive in this apocalypse."

Q: I know walkers aren't exactly zombies, but it seems like in zombie movies there are three ways to go: Everyone dies, you find out what caused the outbreak, or they get to some safe haven. You've already said you don't know what created the zombies. It sounds like something you don't worry about very much.

A: Robert is not interested in proposing a theory of what caused this apocalypse in his work, and that's something that I think is important for us. It's about surviving in this world. We're lucky in the sense that we're able to draw on a lot of great zombie films. And one of the things we really pride ourselves on is adding to that literature, adding original bits with zombies that no one has ever seen."

"When you look at possible endings, I really am interested in finding new territory and a new type of ending, a surprising ending for this series that no one's ever done before, that no one's ever thought of."

Screenwriter Nora Ephron dies at age 71

By Hollywood Reporter staff

Updated at 5:55 p.m. PT: Nora Ephron, the celebrated screenwriter and director, died of leukemia Tuesday evening in New York, according to The??New York Times.

The news followed an afternoon in which it was reported that she was gravely ill, though her?agency CAA and publisher Knopf denied earlier reports that she had died.

Ephron, best known for penning the screenplay for "When Harry Met Sally"?(1989) and then writing and directing "Sleepless in Seattle"?(1989)?and?"You've Got Mail"?(1998), had not been reported as ill prior to a?story?from gossip columnist??Liz Smith?-- which repeatedly referred to the 71-year-old in the past tense while never pronouncing her dead.

?Smith's story was soon edited, but when speaking with? The Hollywood Reporter, Smith said that she'd spoken with Ephron's son??Jacob Bernstein.

???I was told this morning that she was dying, but I can?t confirm it,? she said. Smith went on to say that Bernstein told her that the the family was planning for the funeral. But when no confirmation of Ephron?s death was forthcoming, Smith revised what she wrote.

??I have had to put everything in the present tense,? she wrote. ?It?s bad enough that she?s dying, but I don?t want to be the cause for everyone to grieve in advance."

?Passing along the news that she said she received from Smith, columnist??Margo Howard?tweeted, "Well, to those of you who can't find the news of Nora Ephron's death, the funeral is Thursday -- and maybe that's the way she wanted it."

Daniel Collins Accused Of Threatening Farting New Jersey Neighbor With A Gun

When somebody else farts, it's common to wave your hands -- not a gun.

But Daniel Collins was apparently flat-out tired of his neighbor's flatulence and decided to raise a stink with the help of his trusty firearm.

Police in Teaneck, N.J., said Collins, 72, had been involved in an ongoing dispute with the unidentified neighbor for some time, but Collins got really gassed when the man passed gas near Collins' apartment door, NJ.com reported.

It apparently was the shot heard (and smelt) around the world -- or, at least New Jersey -- because Collins allegedly pointed a revolver at the flatulent neighbor in the vestibule of their apartment building and said ?I?m going to put a hole in your head,? according to NorthJersey.com.

When police arrived, Collins denied the threat, but consented to a search. Authorities recovered a .32 caliber revolver from his vehicle.

Collins was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and terroristic threats, but later released on his own recognizance, NBC New York reported.

Why Investment Banks are Jumping on the Impact Investing ...

Posted by Melissa Ip on 25 Jun 2012 / 0 Comment

Methods to create social change are shifting.? It used to be the case that only philanthropic money and charitable donations are given to assist communities in need.? Now, private investors and companies are using impact investing to drive social change, providing more money than philanthropy and government can afford.

Two months ago, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney announced an Investing with Impact Platform for their clients.? In the past few years following the 2008 financial crisis, there has been a surge of banks from the US to Europe who have launched impact investing products.? These products constitute a new investment style that allows clients to generate both financial and social or environmental returns.? Compared to charity, impact investing would help accelerate solutions faster and ensure long-term sustainability.

But traditionally concerned with only achieving financial returns for clients, why the sudden interest from wealth management firms?

Perhaps one answer is the attractive potential for profit.? A report by J.P. Morgan, Rockefeller Foundation, and the Global Impact Investing Network estimates that the potential profit for impact investors across just five sub-sectors of inclusive business ? affordable urban housing, primary education, maternal healthcare, clean water for rural communities, and microfinance ? could range between $183 billion to $667 billion over the next ten years, and invested capital between $400 billion to $1 trillion.

There is also a consumer appetite for making sure that investment decisions align with personal values.

?Our clients have been increasingly telling us that this is what they want. ?They really want to be able to apply their values.? When we designed the platform, we thought that our comparative advantage was really around being able to bring clients products that were financial first, because that?s what they?ve come to expect from Morgan Stanley ? that we would be absolutely rigorous on risk, rewards, financial returns ? but also providing social impact,? said Audrey Choi, Head of Global Sustainable Finance at Morgan Stanley.

Some suggest the time is ripe for impact investing.? There is a shift in doing less convincing and more educating and discussion.? Those who have never tried before are taking a piece of their portfolio to try it.

?We?re already at that mindset of understanding that wealth can have an impact on social and environmental issues,? said Patricia Farrar-Rivas, CEO of Veris Wealth Partners.

Despite the growing amount of interest in impact investing, experts are concerned about the perceived size and profitability of the market versus what is reality.? Monitor Institute identified three key challenges to the industry: lack of efficient intermediation, lack of enabling infrastructure, and lack of impact investing opportunities.

In reality, there is high search and transaction costs, fragmented supply and demand, small and complex deals, lack of understanding of risk, no infrastructure for people to function as part of the industry, and a shortage of quality investment opportunities for large amounts of capital to be placed at investors? required rates of return.? The last barrier reflects a growing industry with initiatives that need smaller amounts of early-stage capital, and is why some argue a more practical approach to helping these startups is philanthropic capital, with impact investing taking on a long-term role.

As of now, certain steps can be taken to address some of these realities. ?Margot Brandenburg, Associate Director of Rockefeller Foundation, suggests establishing infrastructure to support impact investment. ?One suggestion is financial and non-financial reporting standards as well as performance standards ? namely measurement tools to make sure the investment is really being allocated for social impact and financial returns. ?Another is to build networks of investors and service providers to learn from one another and share information.

Though impact investment will take some time to grow, Mario Marconi, Head of Philanthropy and Values-Based?Investing at UBS, offers ideas to defragment supply and demand.

?We see wealth managers starting to embrace impact investment now. ?However, it will still take a long time before we see impact investment part of every kind of portfolio, which is our vision at UBS. ?The reason why it will take time is because we are talking about introducing a new investment style, and this is a process which takes time,? said Marconi.

?We need to work both on the demand side and the supply side, while at the same time creating a true marketplace. ?On the demand side, short term priorities for private banking is about educating investors and make sure that impact investing is part of the portfolio discussion. ?On the supply side, it?s about finding scalable solutions and therefore, compelling investment opportunities. ?I would argue this is the number one priority for the sector today.?

Back To The 50?s Car Show ? Halogen Sealed Beams Everywhere ...

back to the 50s

This custom low-rider was getting lots of attention even though it had stock sealed beam headlights!

This past weekend was the 39th annual Back to the 50s car show held at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds in St. Paul, MN. I got to go for a day and see everything and I must say the event was a blast! There were big name vendors like Chevrolet, Rousch, Ford and many smaller local vendors like Union Speed & Style and lots of flea-market style setups selling all sorts of automotive goodies! It was just incredible to see so many restored classics, hot rods, street rods and wild custom muscle cars. Arguably the biggest attraction for myself was trying to spot the different lighting upgrades these enthusiasts were doing to their classic domestic rides. It was unfortunate to see so many cars with stock halogen sealed beam headlights though. The vast majority of these vehicles had stock headlights, tail lights and interior lighting. It was only a characteristic of the nicest of all vehicles in attendance to have upgraded headlights.

Back To the 50s

Crowds of people watching parades of classic cars!

I noticed a trend throughout the entire show, that was if a vehicle did have upgraded forward lighting, it was a stock-style composite housing with a blue halogen light bulb inside. I did not see a single HID conversion kit fitted car, or any type of radical LED headlight. I thought for sure there would be SOMEONE there with some crazy headlights, I must have just missed them. The second most common site to see on these cars was some type of film or vinyl over the headlight to give it a different look, but sometimes it was even done on the stock sealed beam headlights! We saw mostly 7? round headlights and many 5.25? round headlights, but I don?t think anyone had rectangular headlights in attendance. It really goes to show how far headlight design has changed since the middle of the 20th century. If you need new headlights for your classic car, then look no further than TLG-Auto. You can replace all of your sealed beam headlights, of any style with HID, halogen, or even new LED technology. Simply visit www.TLG-Auto.com

GOP lawmakers targeted for gay marriage support

Couple Ray Durand (L) and his partner Dale Shields kiss while having their picture taken after their wedding ceremony at the Manhattan City Clerk's office on the first day that New York State's Marriage Equality Act went into effect on July 24, 2011 in New York City.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

One year after New York lawmakers voted to make same-sex marriage legal in the state, opponents of gay marriage are pledging to unseat the Republicans whose support was key to the law's passage, saying they want to send a message to other legislators that there are ?consequences? to their votes.

The National Organization for Marriage, which opposes gay marriage,?says it is funneling $2 million into the state?to oust three state senators who voted to support the legislation. All three, Sens. Roy McDonald, Stephen Saland and Mark Grisanti,?are facing primary challenges. A fourth GOP senator, Jim Alesi, already has said he won?t seek a ninth term due to local opposition over his pro-gay marriage stance.

Alesi, 64, and his three fellow GOP senators joined 29 Democrats on June 24, 2011, to give the bill a 33-29 victory. Though Alesi told msnbc.com he was sad to leave office, he said the vote on gay marriage was "irrevocable" and decried the actions of NOM as "purely revenge" and "blind hatred."

"The focal point of running against good candidates (his three fellow GOP senators) ... is nothing more than a bag of rocks that they?re carrying around and they?ll have to carry them for a long, long time because marriage isn?t going anywhere, it?s here,? he said.

Brian Brown, executive director of NOM, doesn't shy away from the fact his group is hoping to intimidate wavering lawmakers into opposing gay marriage.

?The message is clear, that supporting same-sex marriage is a losing issue, not a winning issue,? Brown told msnbc.com. ?You could lose your career over supporting same-sex marriage.?

He also doesn't buy the argument that gay marriage is a settled issue in New York,?even though a?May 2012 poll by Quinnipac University found the state's voters support same-sex marriage 54 to 37 percent.

"If we don?t get a vote this year, we?re going to work to get one next year. We?re not going away," Brown said. "I think it?s just wishful thinking to say that once you have same-sex marriage the fight?s over. It?s not."

Toward that end, NOM has spent $400,000 on issue ads, billboards, automated calls and direct mail as well as made direct donations through its New York PAC. It is planning to spend another $1.6 million to try to unseat McDonald, Saland and Grisanti as a result of their gay marriage votes.

Both McDonald and Saland?face opponents strongly opposed to gay marriage, and their contests could turn on the issue. Grisanti?also has faced criticism for his marriage vote, but his Republican opponent, Kevin Stocker,?won't say where he stands on the issue. Instead,?Stocker argues?the issue should have been put before voters, not enacted by the legislature, according to capitoltonight.com's "State of Politics" blog.

?NOM is trying to use the choke point of a Republican primary to punish people who voted ? the other way,? said Bruce Gyory, a political consultant in New York who supports gay marriage but did not work on the issue for either side. ?NOM?s strategy is to try to take advantage of the more conservative factor ?? that exists in Republican primaries and use that as an example to say to legislators in other states, ?Don?t you dare vote for this because you?ll lose.'"

But Gyory, an adjunct professor of political science at Albany-SUNY, believes that if the New York lawmakers can escape their primaries, their support for gay marriage could work to their advantage.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, center, hands pens to legislators after signing into law a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, at the Capitol in Albany, N.Y., on Friday, June 24, 2011. Behind Cuomo, from left, are Assemblyman Matthew Titone, Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell, Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy, Sen. Thomas Duane and Sen. Jim Alesi.

"If?you put it up to a general election test in these areas it would probably play to the benefit of these legislators rather than to their political detriment.?

Alesi?said NOM and the money it is pouring into the state was not a factor?in his decision not to seek re-election.?He said they were ?nowhere on the radar? in Rochester except for a billboard they put up in?a remote part of his district. He also denied that a controversial local lawsuit over a personal injury factored into his decision. What it came down to, Alesi said, is that he had a strong Republican challenger, and had determined a bloody primary wouldn?t be worth ultimately losing a Republican-held seat to a Democrat.

?As much as I could easily have won in the general election, I thought it would be very difficult to get through a primary ? where I?d have to challenge my own party,? Alesi said.

He said some of his supporters encouraged him to leave the Republican Party so his marriage vote wouldn't be such a factor, but he didn't want to do it.

Hans Pennink / AP file

Sen. Roy J. McDonald, R- Stillwater, left, talks with his Chief of Staff Patrick E. Poleto during a session of the New York State Senate at the Capitol in Albany, N.Y., Tuesday, June 14, 2011.

?I thought also that it was very important if I were going to run for re-election that I would do it as a Republican because I was a Republican when I voted for marriage equality, and at the time, I said that I think it?s important for other legislatures and other states to know that Republicans can vote for things like marriage equality," he said, noting that he had said from early on, "Republicans can vote for this and go on with their political lives.?

To that end, The New York Times reported that billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Singer will give $1 million to begin a ?super PAC? called American Unity PAC with several other Republicans. It will provide support to Republican candidates who favor same-sex marriage. Singer helped amass some $250,000 for each of the Republican New York state senators after NOM announced its efforts.

The New York primaries are in June and in September, and it remains to be seen how the three lawmakers will fare. But Alesi said he is fine with how everything turned out after his marriage vote, even though it is largely responsible for the end of his senate career

"I took the greatest vote I could have taken ... I firmly and truly believe in equality," he said, remembering that at the time of the vote he told himself, "If this is what the price is, it?s fine with me, because I can?t imagine having the opportunity to do anything this historic and this personally fulfilling again ever in my career ... I am leaving very peacefully."

Roderick Lawrence signs with Miami University's basketball team

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Miami University men's basketball?head coach John Cooper?announced on Friday that 6-foot-4, 180-pound guard Roderick Lawrence?has signed with the team.

?We are excited to have Roderick join the family,? remarked Cooper. ?Our staff is very familiar with him through the recruiting process last year. He decided to sign with Morehead State, but after they went through a coaching change and he re-opened his recruiting we were able to get involved. It came down to us and Penn State, and we?re fortunate to have Roderick come to us from Orlando, Florida. He?s a terrific kid who has really continued to improve, and I think that improvement will flourish as he gets stronger and continues to increase his weight. He has some good skills and with some of the things we want to do he?ll certainly fit in well, and he?ll fit in well as a person because he?s a classy kid.?

Lawrence averaged 16.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.0 spg and 3.1 apg for Dr. Phillips High School as a senior last season as the Panthers amassed a 23-6 record and a 7-0 league mark while advancing the regional semifinals.

The team was ranked as high as No. 3 in the state in 2011-12. During his sophomore and junior campaigns, the Panthers compiled 28-7 records each year, while earning No. 2 rankings in the state and advancing to the Class 6A State Championship game both seasons.

During Lawrence?s three seasons on the varsity team, Dr. Phillips went undefeated in league action each season, compiling a combined 23-0 league record while posting 79 overall wins.

Juror: Sandusky's lack of emotion was 'confirmation'

In an exclusive interview, juror Joshua Harper tells TODAY's Lester Holt that the decision to convict Jerry Sandusky hinged on the credibility of his accusers and the testimony of independent witnesses.

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

A juror in the Jerry Sandusky trial said Saturday that the look on the former?Penn State football coach's face as the guilty verdicts were announced was "confirmation" that they had made the right decision.

Joshua Harper told TODAY that?Sandusky had shown "no real emotion, just kind of accepting because he knew it was true," he added.

Sandusky, 68, was convicted Friday of 45 counts of child sexual abuse and faces a minimum sentence of 60 years in prison, NBC News reported.

The former longtime defensive coordinator for the Penn State football team had denied all 48 counts alleging that he abused 10 boys over 15 years.

Investigations will continue in the Sandusky case related to how Penn State handled the case, and some officials are facing perjury charges. NBC's Michael Isikoff, Ron Allen, and Legal Analyst Wes Oliver join MSNBC's Ed Schultz to discuss the details of the case as well as community reaction to the verdict.

Two grand jury reports accused him of having used his connection to one of the nation's premier college football programs to "groom" the boys, whom he met through his Second Mile charity for troubled children.

Harper told TODAY that the jurors?"were on the same page" when they began their deliberations and had focused on "the facts and determining credibility."

MSNBC's Ed Schultz talks with Jeff Herman, an attorney who specializes in representing sexual abuse victims, about the difficulties the victims in the Sandusky case would have had in stepping forward with allegations.

He said the men who testified that they were abused appeared to be telling the truth.

"I think there were a couple that I felt [were] very credible. I mean, it's hard to judge character on the stand, because?you don't know these kids, but most were very credible, I would say all," Harper told TODAY.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola speaks outside the courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., after his client, Jerry Sandusky, was found guilty of sexually abusing children.

He added that the fact that they all told similar stories about Sandusky was "very convincing."

Harper said they had not convicted Sandusky of rape over the incident witnessed by former Penn State assistant Mike McQueary -- who said he had "no doubt" that Sandusky engaged in anal sex with a boy in a Penn State shower -- because McQueary "did not see any actual penetration."

Ghosts of Sandusky's dreams haunt home where charity was born

"We did not have the evidence that that very?first charge happened," Harper said. "We were in agreement ...?that we could not convict him of that first count."

Sandusky was acquitted on two other counts as well -- one an indecent assault charge involving "Victim 6". The man testified that Sandusky had given him a bear hug in the shower but at one point he just "blacked out."

The other acquittal was an indecent assault charge related to "Victim 5", who said Sandusky fondled him in the shower.

The jury had worked "very well" together,?he added, discussing misgivings about some parts of the case and discussing "inconsistencies." "We were patient," he said.

Pets and More Pets ? Looking After Horse Teeth As Well As Equine ...

Equine supplements can do wonders for the horse. It could make him strong and good. Aside from this, you furthermore need to look after your horse?s teeth to ensure its health. Incisors begin to erupt within a couple of days of birth. Dental procedures have been performed on horses for more than 100 years. Veterinarians, horse owners, blacksmiths, farriers as well as lay people all have given dental solutions to the horse over the years. In recent years, a debate has developed in the horse community as to who should provide oral care to the horse. Present common standards of equine dental care range from having the blacksmith or farrier use an old hoof rasp to ?float? the pearly whites to an equine veterinarian offering a comprehensive dental examination, developing and applying an on-going treatment plan for your own horse. A lot of horse owners provide dental treatments for their own horses.

Dental cysts within the nasal passage can lessen air flow as much as 60 percent, producing heat and trauma. Pressure from growing permanent teeth on the nerves of the infraorbital foramen could affect meridians in the scapula (shoulder blade) as well as the anterior portion of the front lower limbs of the animal. Dental cysts of the mandible affect the meridians of the TMJ, traveling to the point of the shoulder and along the under side of the horse to the stifle, then on the anterior portion of the hind leg over the hoof.

Table angles of both molars as well as incisors are imperative to good equine dental care. The molars of the horse must be remedied before incisor correction could take place. If the mandible is restricted and can only move half as far as normal the teeth will wear out two times as fast. A lot of the malocclusions that aren?t tackled in the floating of points are: waves, sheared tables, slipped molars, hooks, ramps, as well as highlighted transverse ridges, to name a few. Sooner or later the mount cannot take the extreme pain any longer and will respond.

The deciduous (baby or milk teeth) incisors are whiter and broader as compared to their long-lasting replacements. These types of teeth are mainly used for gathering food and self care. There will be typically 12 deciduous incisors in the teen horse and twelve incisors in the older horse. Both the deciduous and permanent incisors are often used to ?age? the animal. The eruption of these kinds of teeth takes place at predictable time frames for the age of the mount and therefore, ageing the horse with the aid of these teeth within the first 5 years of age is pretty accurate.

Equine Supplements plus the proper dental care will help your horse. Other ?wear? related attributes of the incisors (infundibular cup?s, Galvayne?s groove, incisor hook) tend to be less reliable in determining the actual age of a mature horse. Personal and breed differences, differences in diet, stereotypical actions (windsucking, cribbing, fencing rubbing), environmental situations and many additional factors all play a role in how the horse?s teeth may wear. Determining the estimated age of a horse older than 5 years old is at best a professional estimate.

FCC Fridays June 22, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol' Federal Communications Commission's site. Since we couldn't possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we've gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!

LONDON (AP) ? The Irish Republican Army-linked Sinn Fein party says one of its leaders, Martin McGuinness, will meet Queen Elizabeth II next week ? a once-unthinkable symbol of progress toward peace in Northern Ireland.

McGuinness, a former IRA commander, has been invited to attend an event with the queen in his role as deputy first minister of Northern Ireland's Catholic-Protestant power-sharing government.

Neither Sinn Fein nor Buckingham Palace revealed detailed plans for the meeting. Britain's Press Association news agency said McGuiness and the queen would meet and shake hands in a private room at the beginning of the engagement. But even if it amounts to little more than a quick handshake, the meeting will have great symbolic value.

The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, will visit Northern Ireland on Tuesday and Wednesday as part of her United Kingdom-wide tour celebrating 60 years on the throne.

Sinn Fein leaders declined to meet the queen last year during her first state visit to the neighboring Republic of Ireland, arguing it was still too soon after the end of decades of conflict and bloodshed.

But party President Gerry Adams said Friday the party has decided McGuinness should meet the monarch, a decision that is sure to meet opposition from some Irish republicans, who want to end British rule in Northern Ireland.

"We don't have to do it. We're doing it because it's the right thing to do, despite the fact that it will cause difficulties for our own folk," Adams said.

"But it's good for Ireland. It's good for this process we're trying to develop. It's the right time and the right reason," he added.

Buckingham Palace said it understood McGuinness had been invited to Wednesday's event in Belfast for the Co-operation Ireland charity, which works to bring Catholic and Protestant communities together.

It was a sign of progress toward peace that the royal visit was announced several weeks in advance.

The queen has regularly visited Northern Ireland over the past four decades of bloodshed, but none of her previous visits had been announced even a minute ahead of time to minimize the risk of attack.

Threats against the royal family have been real, as evidenced by the Provisional IRA's 1979 assassination of Lord Louis Mountbatten, Prince Philip's 79-year-old uncle. Several small IRA splinter groups still launch gun and bomb attacks in Northern Ireland.

But the situation has been transformed since the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 brought a virtual end to a conflict, known as "the Troubles," that saw about 3,000 deaths over three decades.

Political reconciliation has advanced rapidly since 2005, when the Provisional IRA renounced violence and disarmed, and 2007, when Sinn Fein entered a power-sharing government alongside Northern Ireland's British Protestant majority. Their unlikely coalition has proved remarkably stable.

The meeting with McGuinness follows the queen's historic visit to the Ireland in May 2011, the first by a British monarch since the republic gained its independence from Britain almost a century ago.

During the trip she laid a wreath at a monument to Irish rebels who fought against British rule, spoke a few words in Irish during a speech, and expressed sympathy "to all those who have suffered as a consequence of our troubled past."

McGuinness has since said he was struck by these gestures of reconciliation.

Peter Hain, a former Northern Ireland secretary in the British government, said the meeting is "of huge historic importance."

"It does not mean Sinn Fein have departed one inch from their commitment to an independent Ireland. Nor does it mean the queen will forget the assassination of her uncle, Lord Mountbatten," Hain said.

"But it does show in shining terms how everybody is turning their backs on the past of horror and violence and moving towards peace between previously bitter enemies," he added.
