Of digital riptides and original sin ? was the decline of newspapers ...

At the Brainstorm tech conference on Wednesday, several media-industry heavyweights talked about a video project they did for Harvard University in which they interviewed leaders in the industry about the rise of digital and the decline of newspapers as a force in the media business, and also gave some of their own thoughts about whether media companies could have avoided what they called a ?digital riptide? that sucked the business under.

Their answer was no ? because the upheaval was too widespread to resist, and the disruption of their business model too financially painful. But is their analysis correct? Yes and no.

The three directors of the project, which was put together for Harvard?s Kennedy School of Government, are former Time Inc. editor-in-chief John Huey, former New York Times editor of digital Martin Nisenholtz and Paul Sagan, executive chairman of Akamai Technologies. They interviewed about 60 media insiders about the digital disruption that turned their industry on its head. And their conclusion? As Sharon Waxman of The Wrap put it in her summary of their Brainstorm panel discussion: ?Advertising went away and there?s nothing newspapers could have done about it.?

Is the innovator?s dilemma an excuse?

Nisenholtz, the man who launched the original New York Times website and later acquired About.com for $410 million (and was instrumental in the rise of RSS), said that all of the media executives who were interviewed came to a similar conclusion, and many mentioned Harvard business guru Clay Christensen?s ?innovator?s dilemma,? which describes how incumbents in an industry typically fail to make the changes that are necessary to their survival. As Nisenholtz put it:

?What was common to every interview was the notion of the innovator?s dilemma. Is the Internet sustaining innovation?? Or is it fundamentally disruptive? Does it kill the business model? In the case of journalism, for journalism it was sustaining. But for the advertising it was disruptive. The oxygen got taken out of the financial model.?

Disrupt

Is this a fair description of what happened to the newspaper industry over the past decade? It?s fair in the sense that advertising has been undergoing its own fundamental disruption. As Clay Shirky has described, the old days of simply buying and selling ads based on some kind of geographically-based monopoly on information ? something newspapers used to have going for them ? are no more. And advertisers have also gone in search of targeted audiences and measurable impact, something newspapers have never been much good at, but digital outlets and social networks promise to provide.

At the same time, however, this explanation feels a bit too simplistic, as well as fatalistic ? not to mention convenient, in the sense that it absolves any of those who were running media businesses over the past decade (including Nisenholtz and Huey) of any responsibility for having failed to see the disruption coming, or having neglected to take whatever steps they could to adapt more rapidly. In effect, it says: ?We couldn?t help it! Advertising disappeared. It?s not our fault.?

There were things that could have been done

Was there anything newspaper companies could have done? Sure there is. How about not just shovelling print material online for half a decade or so with no links and no recognition that the internet even exists? That might have been a start. Or how about trying a little harder to figure out how the flow of information was changing, and how the democratization of distribution that the web and social networks provide could be used to their advantage, instead of feared and belittled? To Nisenholtz?s credit, About.com was a smart move in that direction ? too bad it was one of the only ones.

Christensen?s principle does say that incumbents routinely fail to make the changes that are required even when they see the necessity to do so, usually because they fail to understand ? or refuse to understand ? how the disruption they see changes the nature of their business (a classic example being the train industry not seeing itself as being in the transportation business, and missing the disruptive effect of trucking). But it?s not like these changes are an act of God that can?t be adapted to.

The so-called ?original sin? wasn?t

One thing the Fortune panel got right was to debunk the idea that not charging for content was some kind of ?original sin,? to use a phrase coined by Walter Isaacson of Time, who says he was seduced by Madison Avenue advertising executives with bags of money who wanted to see more pageviews, ?and that was the beginning of the end of journalism.? Sagan said that charging for content wouldn?t have worked for most in the early days of the web, and Nisenholtz noted that the web has actually been a great boon for journalism ? just not for traditional media businesses like the newspaper industry.

The title of the project Nisenholtz, Huey and Sagan are involved in (which will be released in full online in September) is Digital Riptide, a name that compares the disruption of the newspaper business to an undertow that can?t be resisted. ?The strongest swimmer in the world can get caught up in a riptide,? Huey said. I think a better metaphor would be a tsunami ? which provides evidence of its arrival, at least for those who are paying attention, and is survivable if those caught up in it take the appropriate steps.

That?s not to say if newspaper companies had tried harder to adapt that they wouldn?t still have suffered painful financial turmoil, since there are systemic costs and structures associated with print that the newspaper business has to somehow deal with, just as the steel industry and the automotive industry have. But to imply that it was something that no one had any control over and couldn?t possibly have done anything about misunderstands the nature of what happened.

(AP) ? Without doing much different, Nissan made its shareholders a lot more money last quarter.

The Japanese automaker's April-June profit jumped 14 percent from the previous year to 82 billion yen ($820 million) and its operating earnings, which factor out its tax bill and one-time quirks, increased even more strongly.

It had better sales in the U.S. but faced headwinds in Japan, China and Europe where sales languished. But those regional differences were footnotes Thursday when the maker of the Infiniti luxury model, March subcompact and Leaf electric car announced its results.

Like other Japanese exporters, it is getting a big perk from the weaker yen, which boosts the value of overseas earnings brought home.

The dollar rose to near 100 yen during much of the April-June period this year from 80 yen levels the same quarter last year, adding nearly 70 billion yen ($700 million) in quarterly operating profit for Yokohama-based Nissan.

It is continuing to trade around 100 yen, but Nissan President and Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn has called that level "neutral."

Years of a strong yen put the Japanese at a disadvantage against powerful Korean rival Hyundai Motor Co., which has been grabbing market share. But Japanese government policies that began late last year called "Abenomics," after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, have weakened the yen.

Overall sales for Nissan's fiscal first quarter surged 18 percent to 2.23 trillion yen ($22 billion).

Nissan left unchanged its outlook for the fiscal year through March 2014 at 420 billion yen ($4.2 billion) profit, up 23 percent from the previous year. Nissan also stuck to its global sales forecast of 5.3 million vehicles, an increase of nearly 8 percent.

"Market conditions were challenging in the first quarter, but our results were in line with our expectations," Ghosn said. "Nissan is on track to deliver its full-year guidance."

Sales of Japanese auto brands in China suffered after anti-Japanese sentiment flared last year during a territorial dispute over tiny uninhabited islands.

China sales in January through March plunged 15 percent compared with the previous year, but the fall was smaller for April-June at just 1 percent, according to Nissan.

Nissan was upbeat about global sales prospects for the rest of the year because of model launches planned in coming months, such as the Rogue crossover and Infiniti Q50 in the U.S., where Nissan has been gaining market share.

Nissan sold 1.17 million vehicles around the world for the first fiscal quarter, slipping 3.3 percent from 1.21 million the previous year. Sales fell in Japan, China and Europe, while growing 20 percent in the U.S.

Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. reports earnings next week.

The Pegboard Wall Workspace

The Pegboard Wall Workspace

Pegboards are wonderful tools for organizing all sorts of things. You can even use one to upgrade one wall of your office for a display and accessorizing system you can easily switch up whenever you want.

Flickr user travisdodson doesn't have much on his wall (though in the back you can see a room full of gear neatly organized on a pegboard). Still, it's not hard to see how you could hang clipboards, photo frames, accessories for your many computers, and even plants on that versatile wall.

If you have a workspace of your own to show off, share them with us by: a) posting it in the discussion below, attaching your image to the post, b) posting it to your personal Kinja blog using the tag featured workspace, or c) adding it to ourLifehacker Workspace Show and Tell Flickr pool. Make sure any photos you include are at least 640x360. Keeping them to 16:9 helps, too! Include a little text about the stuff you used, how you came up with the design, and any other relevant details. If your clever organization and good design sense catches our eye, you might be the next featured workspace.

Apple Q3 2013 Sees Revenue Plunge In China To $4.6B, Down 43% On Q2, Amid Weaker International Sales

chinapple2Amid pressure from low-cost smartphone makers on Android and other platforms, Apple today reported a plunge in its Q3 revenues in Greater China, which includes Taiwan, Hong Kong and the world's largest smartphone market, Mainland China. In that region, sales were $4.64 billion (and $4.9 billion including retail), down 14% over last year and a whopping 43% on last quarter. It's a startling contrast to the $8.2 billion reported in Q2, a record for Apple in the region, according to CEO Tim Cook, when it was the only region to grow sequentially. Overall, international sales outside of the Americas are now at just under 48%, compared to 56% last quarter and 61% in Q4 2012.

Japanese voters give boost to 'Abenomics'

The economic reforms put in place by Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe rest on firmer footing after his party won a comfortable victory in upper house elections Sunday.

By Justin McCurry,?Correspondent / July 21, 2013

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), listens to a question during an interview as rosettes are attached on the names of candidates expected to win, at LDP headquarters in Tokyo, Sunday. Abe's ruling bloc won a decisive victory in Japan's upper house election on Sunday, cementing his grip on power.

Issei Kato/Reuters

Voters in Japan have given the prime minister, Shinzo Abe, a mandate?to continue with his economic program, after his Liberal Democratic?Party (LDP) and its junior coalition partner won a comfortable victory?in upper house elections?on Sunday.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The result means that the governing coalition will hold majorities in?both houses of the country?s parliament for the first time in six?years, raising hopes of an end to the political deadlock that has seen?several prime ministers come and go in quick succession.

In recent years, opposition parties have had control of the upper?chamber, enabling them to block or delay legislation in what has?become known as a ?twisted parliament.?

While a low turnout indicated widespread apathy toward the election ??in which half of the upper house?s 242 seats were contested ? LDP?officials interpreted the result as an endorsement of Abe?s attempts?to lift the world's third-biggest economy out of almost two decades of?stagnation.

Since becoming prime minister last December, Abe has implemented?monetary easing and massive fiscal stimulus, but has yet to explain?the third stage of ?Abenomics? to address structural problems such as?the rapidly ageing population, shrinking workforce, and huge public?debt.

"People wanted politics that can make decisions and an administration?with a stable grounding, which led to today's result," the LDP?s vice?president, Masahiko Komura, told public broadcaster NHK. "'Abenomics' is proceeding smoothly and people want us to ensure the?benefits reach them too. That feeling was strong."

Japanese media reported that the coalition was projected to win at?least 70 of the 121 seats being contested?on Sunday. The official?result will be announced early?Monday.

Nationalist agenda

With no elections due for another three years, Abe is expected to?devote more effort to his nationalist ?values agenda,? even at the?risk of raising tensions with China and South Korea.

Abe, a hawk whose first term as prime minister in 2006 ended after a?year following an upper house defeat and ill health, wants to revise?Japan?s pacifist constitution to give its self-defense forces a more?robust security role.

Any attempt to move away from the military?s strictly defensive role?would anger China and South Korea, with which Japan is already?embroiled in disputes over island territories.

Abe also faces potentially damaging domestic challenges.

He must decide whether to go ahead with unpopular plans the LDP?supported as an opposition party to raise the sales tax from 5 percent?to 8 percent next April ? a move that some experts could put the?brakes on the fledgling economic recovery.

Restarting nuclear

In addition, the LDP is the only party that opposes a phasing out of?nuclear power, a measure?supported by a slight majority?of Japanese?voters. Abe is expected to push for the restart of several reactors?that were taken offline after the meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi?nuclear power plant in March 2011.

Currently, only two of Japan?s 50 working reactors are in operation,?and Abe and the country's influential business lobby argue that the?economic recovery is being hampered by soaring cost of oil and gas?imports.

The election dealt another blow to the left-of-center Democratic Party?of Japan [DPJ], which ended more than 50 years of LDP domination when?it won the general election by a landslide in 2009.

The DPJ was soundly defeated in last December?s lower house election,?and was projected to win 21 or fewer seats in Sunday?s upper house?poll.

Communicating Sustainability: The Power of Well-Constructed ...

This blog was written by Bruce Hull, professor in the College of Natural Resources at Virginia Tech practicing social ecology. Learn more about Bruce at the bottom of the post!

Imagine seeing a dim light growing brighter, hearing distant rumbles of thunder, and smelling the bitter bite of creosote. How should you respond? It?s hard to know what to do if you don?t know you have a problem, but if you interpret the signals as an approaching train, you would quickly step off the tracks and live another day.

Sustainability is difficult to define, which makes it difficult to build consensus for action. We need people who can explain sustainability if we are to create and implement strategies to promote it.

Behind every successful social movement are people who help others see that change is needed. If trends hold, global warming, biodiversity decline, fisheries collapse, aquifer depletion, toxic body burdens, widening gap between rich and poor, and food riots, then sustainability is a problem that needs fixing. A social movement must be mobilized, the economy must be transformed, and a suite of resource-extending technologies must be invented and implemented. None of this will happen unless people see the problem that needs fixing.

Communication skills must be nurtured though higher education, especially in people that have expertise in the nuances of sustainability. And that requires universities to offer much more than the tried and tired curricula fillers of public speaking and technical writing.

We need storytellers, musicians, visual artists, website designers, video choreographers and others motivated to distill the complexities of sustainability into things felt and understood. We need graphics and analogies that help people understand and wrestle with these complexities. Most importantly, we need tools that help explore the difficult trade-offs and confusing uncertainties sustainability poses.

Wonderful resources exist to assist sustainability explainers. Randy Olson?s (credentialed scientist turned Hollywood director) Shifting Baselines provides inspirational examples of how to communicate complex ocean issues. Professional organizations such as the Ecological Society of America provide policy outreach and media training programs. Calls for reforms in university education are mounting. Communications programs such as NYU?s Explainer.net are responding, but reforms in sustainability science programs are needed as well.

Scientists debate about whether to engage in political debate with persuasive communication. To do so risks politicization and loss of objectivity. Scientists, so goes the argument, should only report the facts and thus need only technical writing and public speaking skills. I understand these concerns. Science, and the professions they support, claim neutrality and objectivity as justification for credibility. But sustainability is creating new challenges and a new context. Transformations to academic, scientific, professional education are needed, enhanced communication tools and strategies among them.

Note from Model Forest Policy Program
Our Climate Solutions University program provides excellent instruction from professionals in the field like Bruce Hull and Reverend Rich Cizik on how to effectively communication climate change issues and build support. We are now accepting applications for 2014 Climate Solutions University!

Texas defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat (44) sacks Oklahoma State quarterback J.W. Walsh (4). The senior defensive end was named to the Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list on Friday. (Michael Ainsworth//The Dallas Morning News)

Texas senior defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat has been named the the 2013 Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list, according to the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Despite being sidelined for the final seven games of 2012 with a right pectoral injury, the 6?5?, 245-pound defensive end managed to finish second on team in tackles for loss and sacks. Jeffcoat had 71 tackles, 21 for a loss and eight sacks as a sophomore in 2011.

Before this latest honor, Jeffcoat had been named to 2013 watch lists for the Bednarik Award, Nagurski Trophy, Lott Trophy, Lombardi Award and CFPA Defensive Awards. Jeffcoat is expected to be the senior leader on the Longhorns defensive line, helping to fill the void of Alex Okafor.

Jeffcoat is one of 50 players to be named as a potential winner for the fourth-oldest individual college football award. The list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in November and the winner will be announced on Thursday, December 12.

Oil above $108 as US data points to faster growth

Further signs of an improvement in the U.S. economy helped the price of oil to push above $108 a barrel on Friday and to the highest since March last year.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for August delivery was up 45 cents at $108.49 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contact rose $1.56 on Thursday.

The more heavily traded September Nymex contract was up 39 cents at $108.20 a barrel on Friday.

Oil has jumped more than $11 a barrel in July, and pushed up the price of gasoline along with it. Gasoline futures have gained 13 percent since July 1.

On Thursday U.S. economic news was positive on two fronts: The Labor Department reported a drop in claims for unemployment benefits and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia said manufacturing activity in the mid-Atlantic region grew in July at the fastest pace in more than two years.

The recent gains by the West Texas Intermediate, or WTI, the benchmark oil grade traded on the Nymex, have narrowed the spread to the Brent contract traded in London from over $20 in the past months to less than $1 now.

"Better-than-expected US economic data are providing the WTI price with upward momentum and so is the sharp reduction of U.S. crude oil stocks in past weeks," said a report from analysts at Commerzbank in Frankfurt. "It cannot be ruled out that for the first time in three years WTI could become more expensive than Brent again in the near future. That said, we do not believe this situation will last, given the fact that US oil production is still rising and stocks are still high in the US."

Although they remain near historical highs, U.S. stockpiles of crude oil have been reduced by 27.1 million barrels over the past three weeks, according to the Energy Department.

In London, Brent crude was up 33 cents to $109.03 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline added 3.13 cents to $3.0762 a gallon.

? Heating oil rose 1.28 cents to $3.1131 a gallon.

? Natural gas fell 3.2 cents to $3.78 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Electric vehicles and smart grids: First EU-US Interoperability Centre opens for business

Electric vehicles and smart grids: First EU-US Interoperability Centre opens for business [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 19-Jul-2013
    [ | E-mail | Share Share ]

    Contact: Elena Gonzalez Verdesoto
    JRC-PRESS@ec.europa.eu
    European Commission Joint Research Centre

The first of the twin centres designed to promote common standards in electric mobility and smart grids on both sides of the Atlantic was today inaugurated near Chicago. Converging standards and interoperability between smart grids and electric vehicles will allow for deeper penetration of renewable energies in the electricity systems, thus facilitating the way to a low-carbon economy. Technology harmonisation will drive product and service innovation in the two world's largest economies and could prove instrumental in establishing global standards for electric mobility.

In the light of the EU-US negotiations on a free trade agreement, aiming to lower tariffs and harmonise standards, the work of the Interoperability Centres will be particularly pertinent in the energy and transport sectors.

The launch of the Interoperability Centre for electric vehicles and smart grids is the fruit of 18 months of dedicated work following the Letter of Intent (LoI) for closer co-operation, signed by the JRC, the European Commission's in-house science service, and the US Department of Energy (DOE) in 2011. The Interoperability Centre inaugurated today is hosted at DOE's Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago. The second Centre will be opened in the EU, at the JRC sites in Petten, The Netherlands and Ispra, Italy, in 2014.

The interaction between smart grids intelligent electricity systems and electric vehicles will ensure economically efficient, sustainable power systems with low losses and high security of supply and safety. Smart grids, as upgraded electricity networks, will provide a two-way digital communication between supplier and consumer which will predict and respond to the actions of all users connected to the grid. Interoperability between smart grids and electric vehicles is therefore paramount to achieving better energy efficiency, improved air quality in cities and reduced dependence on fossil fuels in order to move towards a low-carbon economy.

Standardisation in this field will benefit the European energy landscape while converging transatlantic technical regulations could lead the way to global standards. The trade and investment agreement currently negotiated by the EU and the US known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), aims to remove tariffs and differences in technical regulations, standards and certifications which cost time and money to companies and consumers. In the context of the importance of this agreement for converging standards across the Atlantic, the work of the twin Interoperability Centres will play a scene-setting role for technology harmonisation in the two biggest world economies.

In an additional development relevant to EU-US co-operation in standardisation, the JRC and the US National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) yesterday agreed to boost their co-operation in standards and measurements to 10 different areas, among which energy and transport.

    ###

    BACKGROUND

The work of the two Interoperability Centres focuses on interoperability between electric vehicles, smart grids and recharging systems, as well as inter-laboratory comparisons. They also provide testing facilities for electric vehicles, batteries and related supply equipment. Finally, they will promote closer ties between the EU and US vehicle industries on electric vehicle interoperability

Locket puts ads on your Android homescreen, pays you a penny to unlock video

Take a look at your Android phone. See that background shot? It's probably kind of cute, but hardly inspiring. In fact, is is bringing you any joy whatsoever? Is it helping you to make rent? Believe it or not, there's now an app for that. Locket has just launched into the Google Play Store, enabling a limited (for now) selection of advertisers to place ads on your lock screen and then paying you one cent for each time you unlock. Of course, it's capped at $0.03 per hour (so every other unlock is just making the company money), and you'll be allowed to cash out, toss the funds on a gift card or donate your earnings to a charity. For now, it's restricted to users based in the United States. Oh, and don't worry, we already did the math -- you can earn $262.80 by unlocking your phone's screen three times each hour, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Or you can just mow some grass.

Fan grabs 4 foul balls at Indians game

CLEVELAND (AP) ? Some guys have all the luck, and a little skill, too.

One fan at Sunday's game between the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals at Progressive Field grabbed four foul balls, a once-in-several-lifetimes achievement.

Greg Van Niel, a season-ticket holder who wasn't sitting in his usual seat, got the four souvenirs during the Indians' 6-4 win.

"Three of them were catches and one was a ball I picked up off the ground," Van Niel told the team. "The third one I think was the hardest one ? I think I ended up sprawled across a few rows, and I got some cheese on myself. But the other ones were just a matter of being in the right place at the right time."

    Yeah, four times.

Van Niel described one of his grabs, on a ball hit by Indians leadoff man Michael Bourn, as being highlight-reel worthy.

"Michael Bourn hit one that was off the fa?ade, and that's where I was in the cheese fries," he said. "(That) one was crazy acrobatics. I was strewn across three rows, and I needed some assistance getting back."

Van Niel posed for a picture for the Indians clutching three of the souvenirs in his right hand. He said he had never caught a foul ball before his amazing one-day haul.

There were 15,431 other fans at the Indians' final game before the All-Star break, but it's safe to bet none had a day quite like Van Niel.
