Ford driving innovation in Silicon Valley

Ford Motor Co. has opened a laboratory in Palo Alto, Calif., in hopes of finding more ideas to help the automaker develop innovative products for its vehicles.

Ford (NYSE: F), which operates two vehicle assembly plants in Louisville, is hoping the lab will help it engage the Silicon Valley tech community in its quest for "the next great idea," the Upstart Business Journal reported.

The lab, designed to mirror the "culture of design and hacking that exists" in the Valley, features an open-floor layout with an outdoor area near its break room as well as a cozy couch and a white board where staffers can scrawl ideas and collaborate.

"We have been innovating for more than a century at Ford, but we acknowledge we don't have a monopoly on creativity," Ford chairman Bill Ford said in a statement. "Our new office will complement our existing research efforts by allowing us to tap into the region that has been driving consumer technology forward in recent decades."
