The Toughest Part of the Day with MS

As I struggled to consciousness this morning after a very long day of travel yesterday I fought fatigue of the journey, time zone changes, cramped muscles and likely dehydration? each served with a side of multiple sclerosis.

As I course through my morning inventory, breakfasted on the day?s itinerary and paid the day?s weather forecast a keen eye I became aware of the fact that I was plotting my day?s course much dependent on how our old friend might act today. Not changing plans so much as charting out possible/probable diversions from the day?s track line.

That got me wondering about everyone else?s days with MS. I have three or four places in my day that MS can beat me up.

  • Mornings are when I can wake to find a new (or worsened) symptom that has emerged whilst I slept.
  • About 6-8 hours after I wake ? usually the warmest part of the day and when my body temperature seems to peak.
  • 20 minutes or so after I wake from an MS induced kip, as I seem to have more energy right after I fear I over-do a bit.
  • The quiet time just before sleep when my brain doesn?t have anything to distract it from the battle over my body.

These low points of my day can sometimes be ?powered through? but at a high price. Sometimes that is just the toll which must be paid for trying to live a life with MS. Other times, the bridge forward is a complete washout and I find myself sitting on the side of the road.

Knowing what parts of the day can be most difficult can help in planning and it can help us to avoid sudden crashes.

What are the difficult times in your day? Have you thought much about the pattern? What do you do about it (if anything)?

Wishing you and your family the best of health.

Cheers

Trevis
