Single In D.C. On Valentine's Day? Treat Yourself!

WASHINGTON -- D.C. doesn't have to be a lonely place if you're single on Valentine's Day. We spoke with recent D.C. ex-pat and author of "The Science of Single" Rachel Machachek for ideas on how to spend what could be a very uncomfortable day.

Whether you're male, female, tired or just want to dance, here are six ways to spend a fun day avoiding or embracing Cupid, Machachek has you covered:

  • Potomac River

Short of jumping in the Potomac because you're still single, my thoughts for a solid single Valentine's hang includes...

  • Sephora

Go to Sephora for a make over, not because you need it but because it will be fun and make you feel awesome. They will do the makeover for free. They will also want you to buy the products they use on you. You are not obligated to buy anything of course, but most likely you will. I always aim for the cheapest item like the lip pencil because it can double as lipstick with a layer of gloss.

  • "The Americans"

Go home and take up residence in the middle of the bed BECAUSE YOU CAN. You are single. Enjoy it. Bring your laptop and catch up on the first three episodes of "The Americans," a new drama on FX set in Cold War-era DC. It has a superb eighties soundtrack, highwaisted jeans with pleats and Keri Russell being bitchy and slutty. It is amazing and the love relationship in it so effing complicated it will make you happy you're hanging solo.

  • Online Dating

Go online. Log on to OKCupid (or Match or Plenty of Fish or any other online dating site). Do you know how many single people will be clicking around on Valentine's Day? So many. Update your profile. And for god's sake, create a profile if you haven't already.

  • Politics And Prose

Scope out some new people. You can do this at home or better yet, go to a cozy coffee shop like Tryst or Chinatown Coffee or Modern Times (in Politics & Prose bookstore).

  • Black Cat

Go to the Black Cat for the Valentine's Day Rock & Roll Dance Party. Dance with the people. It's free. It starts at 8 p.m.

Machachek will be signing books today at the WPA Bakery in Richmond, Virginia and participating in Single and Social at the Virginia Repertory/Barksdale Theatre at Willow Lawn on Thursday, February 21.
