Garden design is a whole new realm of possibility, especially for those among you that are more artistically inclined. The great thing about this kind of work though, is that even if you only have some basic ideas, you can call in the professionals to get their advice on how to go about turning your garden in to a gateway to your personality, a blank canvas upon which you may scrawl and scribble, no matter what ability to you have, or you have not.

Today, we?re looking at a family garden. How would you put together a plan to make a great space for you and your family to live in? How do you juggle the many aspects required for a family garden whilst still creating with the space you have? The answers are below!

Naturally, a true family garden needs to be practical, almost above all else. A close second, is, of course, those beautiful natural and contemporary aesthetics you?ll want to attribute to your green space.

A combination of surfaces is a good way to begin, think of decking, patio, grass and plantlife, and the kind of space you?ll need for each. With kids, it?s best to have a good deal of garden space for them to run and play in, but that doesn?t mean there?s a limit to what you can do around the edges and away from the main area. The planning stage is for you to decide all this.

Try drawing up a scaled diagram of your garden and marking out areas for each of the aforementioned aspects. You can squeeze a lot into a small space when you plan out in this manner.

Planting is one of the big factors to consider, as you?ll want to do this strategically, keeping out of the way of the kids, yet being focal enough to maintain an element of interest in the overall aesthetic , and baring maintenance and shaded areas in mind. Vegetable or herb spaces are great too, for food and even for educational purposes for the children.

Making space for sitting in the sun, perhaps via decking, as well as putting in a path will stop the worn-away look that dead grass will give on a route or patch that is over used, as well as adding interest and visual dexterity to your space!

Lastly, sheds are a great, practical addition to any family home and allow for the storage of items that would otherwise clutter up the garden space!
